Don´t know what is wrong with the box, but as far as a replacement goes, as I remember it the early boxes were Maxi internal in a Lotus case, carried over from the Elan, and had an intergrel bell housing, so a bit speciel. Later boxes had a seperate bell housing, and Excels used a toyota box (w65?, don´t have my file with me but it is a Celica box)), You should be able to change for another box from a 900 engine, i.e a Excel or Sunbeam box, but they are expensive. Best place for advice is Jensen Healy preservation Socity, loads of info on 907 engines, do a search I know it tels you the correct source car for the Toyota box.
If you change boxes, from another Lotus check that the spigot bearing you use is correct size, as they are diffrent on diffrent cars.
Looking at the prices of cars, best bet may be a donner car.
