Lotus in the capital

London Lotus Opens on Park Lane

Lotus Cars Ltd is launching its latest dealership today (5th July) located in the prestigious surroundings of Park Lane, London.

The dealership is holding an open day which includes charity events and a fully stocked showroom of Lotus cars, complete with the GT3 Concept and Lotus’ latest offering - the 2-Eleven.

At 5:30 pm, Mike Kimberley CEO of Group Lotus Plc will formally open the showroom accompanied by celebrities, VIP’s and key exclusive guests of Lotus and London Lotus.

Mike Kimberley said “I would like to welcome London Lotus to the Lotus family. We are pleased to have teamed up with such an enthusiastic and professional organisation that has so much knowledge and understanding of what Lotus is all about. Lotus cars, which are so well regarded as drivers’ cars are not out of place in the capital, with their head-turning looks and safe, agile chassis. Performance enjoyment comes from the Lotus philosophy of lightweight design, which means better fuel economy and reduced environmental impact. This Lotus philosophy is truer today than it has ever been, taking into account the need for environmentally friendly, but exciting driving.”

Geoff Hodge, Managing Director of London Lotus said “We are looking forward to exhibiting the Lotus brand to the discerning customers of central London. The Park Lane location provides a great ‘shop window’ with which to display the multi-award winning, high-tech Lotus products and show the unique Lotus brand of style, performance and technology”.

boxedin PARK LANE?

Given recent events attached to the area is it wise to take a car there never mind a showroom full. I trust each and every car will have been searched, checked, security clearance etc.

Spent a couple of hours there this morning chatting to Kris Hodge and Phil Greenwood (Lotus UK sales manger). a VERY pleasant dealership experience; all too rare these days.

Exige GT-3 concept is simply superb in the flesh, wonderful clean lines and aggressive details - made the Exige look small.
Also had a peek at the white Mosler and Weismann 'back stage'.

Thanks guys.

This is good news and another forward step for Lotus. It will also be ideal for the next two higher priced models, particularly the new Esprit.

...still going to be crap build quality though!wink I honestly hope they get it right in future...but I don't think Lotus are capable of it in their present format? frown

Dont know how Lotus can afford this and seems a bit of a stupid move to me....people buying cars on Park Lane are rich and stupid and want Aston's, Bentleys....not lightweight track biased cars.....MG had a showroom on Park Lane for a while when they brought out their "supercar" - and then they went bust.

All for Lotus having a proper presence in London but Park Lane? They must be barking mad.

It's a dealership. A company that buys a product (from a certain Hethel based manufacturer) and then sells them to the public, without any dirct ties to the manufacturer.
Just like your local Ford dealership or newspaper shop.

Not too sure about the road test route, though!

It is a franchise dealership, albeit the flagship considering it's location. I was at the launch yesterday and you'd be surprised how many people with Aston Martins and Bentleys were there showing interest in the product.

No disrespect to MG, but they were crap anyway and the SV was crap too.

The team at London Lotus are a nice bunch of guys and I was pleased to meet Mike Kimberley and some of the management from Lotus. They have got some interesting products in the pipeline.

Good luck to them I say, they need as much support from the Lotus fraternity as possible.

I honestly don't know how they will make a profit.

I remember seeing the showroom (ex MG rover) up for lease on the agents website, and trent was something like 258,000 GBP a year with another 140,000 On top of that for business rates. Given the small size of the premises and level of competition from out of town lotus dealers with lower cost bases, i just can't see how they will stay in business especially having to pay 8 quid congestion charge every time they take a car in or out of the showroom.

Most of the big dealers like HR Owen are leaving the capital saying the high rents are making it completely uneconomic to do business there, even cars with big margins like ferraris will struggle simply because you don't sell a car every day.

So its a very nice glamerous place to put a showroom, but to be honest i used to prefer the "old shed" lotus dealers like salisbury where a bunch of enthusiasts would come down and have a family barbeque day and a parts jumble sale. can't see hot dogs and starter motors going down on park lane.

Hiya folks - why all the discussion about IF - or why - Lets just be happy that SOME do like and believe so much in LOTUS that actually want to try and make it for the rich and famous too...those not leaving the high society( City and Park Lane) to discover the true happiness of driving a LOTUS...

At least some do - and yep am pretty sure they have thought about - and calculated the costs of going there..

Remember no one without money as much as gets the chance to rent the space...

SO .. best wishes and hope it goes the right way... Boosting sales of one of the few British sportsmarques left LOTUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it's clever and powerful marketing. With the new 2+2 in the pipeline and out next year and the new Esprit the year after, plus others, Lotus is bringing the Marque back to where it used to be in it's most profitable and high profile period.

The Elises and Exiges will still attract a racing image whilst the new higher spec cars will pull in the Park Lane crowd for those who want something different to the thousands of Astons and Ferrari's in that lucrative part of the City.

This looks to be a major statement of where Lotus are going and who they want to be. Lotus's concentration on it's core values and Colin Chapmans original concepts over the last 18 months has seen some huge improvements and the company recently announced that it's production has increased substantially. On top of this the first stages of it's 5 year plan are in place seeing, for the first time in 10 years, it's debts cleared by Proton and a clean bottom line. As the headlines said "Lotus back in the Black" (see article in Autocar this week). With 2 superb new models imminent (in Automotive terms) i think you should all maybe support rather than knock one of the only True British marques left for it's proactive decision to take on this dealer.
