I have it on very good authority that the "MkII" upgrade kit is worth every penny for the suspension (I am saving the pennies as I type!). For a clutch I have always tried to use an AP kit, never had any problems from it. Although my Mk 1 has covered 42000 miles and is only just showing signs of strain on the clutch, have you got a red clutch hose? has the clutch fluid been changed? Is you slave cylinder moving under load?
Hope this helps
