Hi Dan,

My 1989 Esprit Turbo is doing exactly the same thing. I've just replaced the thermostat to cure another problem (similar but not identical), and previously the water pump was replaced. The only thing which has been suggested to me is that the earth connection to the engine might be poor, although I'm not convinced this would cause this symptom. Something to look at this weekend though.

Do your fans come on when the temperature rises? Mine don't, indicating that the fan thermostat isn't registering the same temperature rise.

Be interested to know what you find out...

Jez.

Hi Dan,

Hmmm... Sounds like it may not be the same problem. Do you know where the fan switch is in relation to the temperature sender on the V8? There is some distance between the two on the turbo, but if the water really was getting that hot I'd still expect the fans to come on...

Good luck - and let me know how you get on!

Danny,

If you car is a 98/99 or 2000, they had the porous engine, i.e. wet/dry liners not sealed with araldite, around 50 engines, I`ve had 2 of them. It is now a well known problem, albeit Lotus denied the fault at first.

The wet liner above leaks water down passed the dry liner as the ally engine gets hot and over a period of time, the dry liner goes oval, hence it is known as the oval liner syndrome. They will be no signs of water leakage, the car will run fine but over a period of time, you will end up putting more and more water in until it hydraulics and bang.

Hopefully it is not this, but a blocked rad or thrermostat not opening. Try changing the thermostat as an easy fix and cheap, around £6 even from a main dealer. It is situated at the back left of engine top as you look form the back of the car. Don`t forget to bleed the system, bleed allen key on top cross over ally pipe at back of engine and then the rad bleed screw in the passenger front wheel space.

It is common for the Esprit to sludge up the rads, as they sit almost at 45 degrees. Check all the apertures at the front of the car for the air intakes and make sure no debris/leaves blocking the air paths and also up the big air intakes at the back of the car by the windows and the side skirts. There is a expansion tank in the rear drivers wheel arch, it is self lvelling so should not need to be filled up but worth checking to see if it is leaking as this again is a common area for leaks on the V8.

Check your oil for cream and maybe get your car pressure tested.

First things to try is to let your car stand and let the fans come on 3 times, you lay to one side of the car and check all 3 fans run, as it might just be a faulty fan, but unlikely as you state it is when you are running and the fans should not be running at this stage. Worse situation to drop heat is to put the air/con on as this makes the fans run automatically or put your heater on full heat.

Ihope it is not the oval liner problem, as new engine fitted is £22k or rebuit is £6-8k depending where you go.

Also try back flushing the rad and also before you do this, run a hose pipe backwards from underneath through the back of the rad, as so much shite gets in here.

In order then,

1) bleed system and make sure you run 50/50 water/anti-freeze, so bleed engine crossover pipe and bleed rad from left front wheel arch. Be careful and wear good gloves, as gets bloody hot.
Fill up expansion tank in rear drivers wheel arch, don`t worry about over filling as will blow out top of engine bay expansion tank, same with that tank in engine bay.

2) Check oil for cream.

3) Change thermostat and check to see all 3 fans work.

4) Back flush rad and also run a hosepipe through back of rad all over to remove shite.

This should cure it and if not, 2 causes, blocked rad or sludged up, faulty water pump or worse situation, oval liners.

If car has warranty, should be covered on that, both mine were and I know of another chap who had 60k miles on his v8-gt and the problem occurred and Lotus basically said it had happened at high mile, but they paid 50% of costs to re-build his, so not all lost.

Problem has generally reared its` head at between 5-20k miles from new.

Don`t know what year yours is or how much miles but I hope the above helps in some way.

I am not normally a lister here but on the Ultima site within Pistonheads, but this came through on the Lotus update.

Are you a member of the UKLotus e-group and if not, why not, as a great site.
