Excel alternator belt

Yes it's a bit later I wanted it on Sunday
Usually I use my local small motor factors who are excellent.
But when praise is due.....Halfords on Sunday were very good.
I drove down on Sunday morning, completely forgot to take any tools with me but I did have a Halfords part number (from lotusexcel.net). Looked at the belt and thought it looked way to small.
So I asked the 'not spotty teenager' behind the counter if they have a book for fanbelt applications.
No it's on the computer.
When I tell him the car, he looks but says he doubts it's on.
He then asks if I have the belt with me, I say yes but it's on the car and I forgot my tools.
No problem what tools do you need?
Problem solved old belt off new belt found and fitted. Cost of belt just under £4.

Alternator belt is just a standard V belt.
But I know what your talking about - 1986 is the change over year for the cam belt and guess which one I got first - yes the wrong one!

Is the Excel your daily drive Steve?
How do you find it to live with, stuff like fuel consumption, niggles and glitches (or character as true petrolheads would say!)
Reason I ask is a good friend of mine is halfway through resurrecting an '88 SE, really looking forward to seeing it finally hit the road.
It had been left sitting in someones garden for 5 years prior to him rescuing it and in truth he probably paid too much for it considering the engine had to be fully rebuilt and it had a far shoddier than it looked repair lurking in the front end.
Still, £1500 worth of engine bits and several square miles of glassfibre matting and it's really starting to take shape.
I'm proud of him for staying the course, he came close to knocking it on the head a few times.
Another Excel is saved!

Yes it is a daily drive - my wifes
I have to put up with my company van.
I don't really care about mpg, if I did I'd have a oil burning eurobox.
Just asked SWMBO and after 5mins with a calculator she reckons about 23
She does about 50 miles a day. Even bigger
It must be a lot less when I drive it And I drive it at any excuse
I bought a good one at a a good price and spent time making sure it was OK before
useing it as a daily drive.
Now it gets a quick check over every weekend, oil/filter change every 3k miles.
Major stuff as needed - last weekend I did the cam belt and new alternator belt!
If you want to drive a 'real' car then you have to live with that side of Lotus/classic car ownership.
Everyone has different needs for a car and a Lotus/classic is not for everyone just as a eurobox is not for me!
