The 111S is the VVC (variable valve control) version of the 1.8 Rover K-series, rated at 156bhp, coupled to a Rover 5 speed gearbox.

The 111R is the 1.8 Toyota VVTi engine out of the Toyota Celica, rated at 189bhp, coupled to a 6 speed Toyota gearbox.

111s has 1.8lt rover Kseries 156bhp VVC and revs out to 7600revs if I am correct from memory. The 111r 1.8lt Yoyota VVC with 190 BHP and revs out to 8600revs and is far more bullet proof compaired to the Kseries.

I agree on the on the lump in the R, but the new 111S has another Toyota lump in it, the less powerful one from the mr2 compared with the celica engine in the 111R

Isn't the new base model Elise just the Elise S, not the Elise 111S?

Both cars have had the '111' dropped to make things a bit simpler. The 111R became the R, and when the base model Elise got the less powerful Toyota lump, it became the S, as the 111S had stopped production when the k-series engines ran out.

Not quite correct, and rather confusing. The 111S used to be the 'middle' car, with a 156bhp VVC K-series, between the 120bhp base model car (non-VVC K-series) and the VVTLi Toyota engined 111R

The new 'S' (134bhp non-VVTLi Toyota engine) really replaces the base model K-series cars, not the 156bhp 111S.
