$49K for a Cortina?

Lotus Cortina up for grabs in the USA

The Lotus Cortina has always been a desirable car, but can a top notch example demand such a high price?

Why not? With competition history it's got just as much provenance as a Shelby GT350. If someone's willing to pay.

There are evidently quite a few over here; 49k is out the window, though! I've seen a very good one for ten grand.

$49K?

Not even Chapman's own example went for that much IIRC...

Strewth - only 64 built? That seems awfully low - I personally have known 2 owners of such cars, which would seem a high proportion. (Bet their kicking themselves now for not hanging on to their cars )

I previously owned the Bengt Soderstrom / Gunnar Palm 1966 RAC Rally winning Lotus Cortina NVW 239C and remember it being sold thro', IIRC, Coy's in the early 80s for £24k. I sold it for considerably less in 1970.
It had been fully restored before the Coy's sale and it was seen competing on the Dales Rally in the mid 80s in the Historic class.
It would be interesting to see it again.
