Just minding my own business when a guy turns up down the storage shed , tells me hes seen me about in my old car and wondered if I would be interested in a elan spring dhc. Its been of the road along time and was dismantled for light restoration and never put back together. The chassis is supposed to be good, the engine needs a top end rebuild the body is crack free but need painting. Hes looking for £4k is this about right ? Going to look on Tuesday and hopefully do a deal.

It obviously depends on what ohter work needs doing, but if it's a genuine Sprint, everything is there and the only real work is reassembly, painting and top-end rebuild, then that sounds a pretty good bargain.

Allow between £1K and £1.5K for a cylinder head rebuild by the recognised experts (QED) ready to drop back on the block. Obviously cheaper if you are confident enough to tackle it yourself.

Top-notch respray will probably be aroiund £3,500.

Value of finished car will be upwards of £10K for a sound car in all-round good condition; concours examples would realistically reach £20+.

Thanks Sam, I see your in the east midlands as well, were abouts ?

The paint I can do my self and could do the top end rebuild as well if time permits. Nearly got the old midget rebuilt so it could be next in line for the rebuild.

I'm near Ashby de la Zouch.

If I'm anywhere close to you or the Elan, give me a shout - I'd be happy to come along with you if you'd like a second opinion. I've rebuilt Elans down to nut-and-bolt level, so I'm fairly familiar with them.
