Hi lads, thanks for the replys. Its just some info re the clutch. Mine is right down on the floor and bite is quick to engage, but theres no slip. The pedal is very very sprung loaded and theres a lot of 'wasted' travel. Release bearing whines when left in neutral. Sound about right?? probably not. Will be joining the club shortly.
Thanks in advance. tim.

Yes Tim, definitely worth joining Autobahstormers.
If "very sprung" means you have to press the pedal really hard to move it...then that's standard - you'll develop a powerful left leg! But, all that force highlights an achilles heel whish is that the clutch release pin shears (twice on mine so far) and the bell housing cracks. The club have a source of uprated pins (I now have one in the glove box - not that its a roadside option!) and can sort out a bellhousing with a steel insert to avoid the fracture. The later cars (by time they fitted the 10 stack CD in the boot in place of the indash unit) had a modified bellhousing that may have been retro-fitted to earlier cars at a convenient service. If yours is an early car, may be worth checking its had the upgrade.
My clutch has never had the long travel you describe. Sounds like something may be flexing where it shouldn't. Could be the cracked bellhousing issue?? Also I dont get the whinning in neutral so maybe that's the thrust bearing - may be on its way.
Lets hope not - I'm probably just scare mongering!
Good luck
Mike
