Hi,

I cant comment on the merits of the 111S, but of the Lotus I've owned so far the 111R is easily the best. Performance with refinement the K series cant match

111r is in a different class to the 111s. Much more power, even if you have to work at it a bit ie making use of vvti.
Also suspension is no where near as crash bang wallop and handling is just as good.
Toyota engine far superior to K series and more reliable.
Test drive the 111r get it to 6200 revs and see what happens.
Guess what i would go for.

even though I own a '04 111S, I'd say a used 111R!

This is my dilema , looking for something for the summer but i have seen a few nice 111s at reasonable money JCT have nice one although done 30k for around £17,000 but i really like the 111r and am trying to justify it, my big concern is if im going to spend 20k + i want to be able to drive for a good part of the year not just summer and i also dont want to lose much on it so trying to source some nice second hand ones at good prices

30K's no problem in an Elise, just make sure that it's had all the relevant servicing, check out what's due next and how much (cambelt could be due soon). Remember that buying the car is only part of the expense, plus fuel bills on an R will be 15-25% more based on the consumption figures. At the end of the day it's the handling that makes the car, not power.

Toyota engine is one of the better modern 4 pots and reliability wise has a pretty good reputation. But like most modern 4 pots, utilises some of the design principles introduced on the K Series, 17 years ago. Progress hey

But in true Rover style, the engine became renowned for one fault*. And it was all down to a cost effective way of warming the engine up quickly to keep emmisions low.

*pre-empting the power comparison, VHPD was not developed nor endorsed by Rover.

Go elsewhere, JCT are well known to be one of the worst dealers around. They WILL screw you.

Drive both - then buy the best value one that you prefer. There are so many Elise variants you'd be daft not too.

For sure, go for the 111R with the Toyota engine, you will not get disappointed...
