If your reading this the your either an owner or looking into buying one, but I was wondering what has lead us all to buying these frustrating/rewarding sports cars? Personally when I was about nine I was taken on a visit to Hethel, during which I had a trip in the then 'James Bond' Turbo Esprit (the one with the skis on). After that I was totally hooked, now due to the Elise I can afford one,so guys and girls, how did you wind up with the Lotus bug?
love the design and looks of lotus cars + they are seriously good vfm in terms of buying a high performance car, with herritage, looks, exclusivity and they all drive very well too.
in terms of herritage there right up there with ferrari an porsche and even with the huge success of the elise there not the kind of car you see everyday + there made here in old blighty and along with aston, jag, tvr and rolls are the last of our motorcar industry (even if they are all foreign owned now...)
oh an james bond drove one

Hi
I was looking for a £10,000 convertible. The battle was between a Porche 944, a TVR S2 or a Lotus Elan. I chose the latter after finding LEC (lotus elan central) Loads of info, and before long i was hooked! Fiberglass body, treated chassis (not sure what the correct term is but not galvanised) and an Isuzu ultra reliable engine with loads of room to take modification.
I've owned it for two years now and love it more now than i did two years ago! sad innit?
The only way i could afford a sports car was if i were to carry out the maintenance myself. With the help of LEC this is made possible, even for me with only basic mechanical skills. I've learnt a lot more over the last two years.
For the first 12 months i used it as an very day vehicle, however now its a pampered second car, and also kept garaged unlike the first 12 months.
I have some upgrades to carry out at the begining of next year, brakes/engine mods, should be fun.... gulp.
Oh, and the main reason i bought it - Its bloomin gorgeous!!!!

I've always liked the design and philosophy of Lotus. It all comes down to power to weight ratio
When the elise came out I knew I had to get one .
But having such high taxes on cars here and high insurance costs, it wasn't until recently I was able to afford one. And I absolutely love it.
It might turn out to be more unreliable than my Honda Civic, but with 80 hp less it's faster and 10 times the fun to drive
But why lotus ? Dunno really. If honda had made a 700kg high performance car I might have bought that instead. Was considering an S2000,but waaay to heavy. And I think the Elise looks and drives better

The Company has so much heritage!!!
the 49 as first car to use the engine as part of chassis
Lotus came across ground effects
then the 88 with its double chassis system
I myself have a S4 SE Elan as a road car, a S2 7 as a racer which i share with my dad and a 18 FJ that needs a rebuild.
My Uncle has a 11 club as road car and also a Elite S1 or 2??? and a Elan +2JPS
And Grandpa also has a Elan +2 which bought new...sold 5yrs ago...and has now re bought to restore.
We have a 'few' Lotuses and love them to bits...they do give you grief but it's definatly worth it!!!

It was the 1.8 k-series engine that got me looking at Lotus again, via the Elise!! Was putting a 1.8k in my Metro, so was very topical...
I think the beauty of the engineering and the "performance through lightweight" philosophy set Lotus apart from convential manufacturers. I guess that also accounts for why they are not as profitable as some manufacturers?
It is quite a shame as I am shortly due to have available funds for an Elise, however am losing my garage in the process, so my entry into the world of Lotus will have to wait for a while
But I am confident that Lotus will continue to make cars that I will want to buy, so one day soon
