Please can any body sympathise / help with my problem. I have owed my lotus Elise (s2) for two years and use it to go to work in daily approx 23 miles round trip. The problem occurs when I seem to go out for the day and be driving for an hour + the engine light seems to just come on for no reason. After the car has been turned off normally the next day the engine light has turned its self off??? Thus making me look like a fool when I go to lotus with the problem. They have said “ well there was a error message but its nothing to worry about!” this statement seems to go against all the information in the manual and making me not trust the engine light at all!!!, which cant be good if something serious happens especially when Lotus starts to give out repair bills ouch! If anyone can shed any light on the problem It would be much appreciated. cheers

Have been experiencing similar problem with 111r but light stayed on for a long time - booked it in to Lotus garage [but had to drive it for a week because could not get booked in any sooner] light went off occasionally but always returned. Car is in Formula One garage Newcastle tomorrow to be sorted i will let you know the result. Preliminary checks -on computer are that it may be a faulty sensor re emissions or a faulty probe. I am not too worried as the car is under warranty which i suspect yours is not so i will try and find out as much as possible re costs etc when i pick the car up.

Ken,

It sounds like yours is the exhaust sensor as after mine had done 600 miles it did the same thing. I took the car in and all was fine, I am now on around 15K and this problem has started I have noticed the difference if I put normal fuel in the problem seems more apparent then if I put super in (may be she only likes the good stuff!) let me know the result.

Cheers

I had a problem with the MIL light coming on a few months back, car went back to the dealer 4 times, first to have a VVC temperature sensor replaced, then again for the same thing, then something else I can't remember. Eventually the ECU was replaced and (touch wood) OK so far. The light would come on on firing up when the engine or outside temp was hot. Then it would come on after 20 mins. Each time it would take 4 or 5 starts to reset. Bleedin' nuisance, hope yours isn't an ECU problem. However if the car's not going into limp home mode it's probably something silly, a lot of these sensors seem to be there to please the green lobby.

Picked car from garage tonight. It was the exhaust sensor that was the problem rather than anything more serious.
Cost = £36 + vat for sensor
£60 + vat 1 hours labour
Total = approx £113
The sensor on the S2 with Rover engine is exactly the same as on the 111r and the lads at the garage said they have changed quite a few. You could probably just put up with it the way it is but if for some reason the engine is chucking out more emissions/fuel or whatever you could do serious damage to the catalytic converter which costs a bloody sight more than £113.
Plus no light = feel good factor etc.
Hope this helps.

Gents

I think I might have to bite the bullet and get it checked out, I have spoke to the main dealer and they suggested I bring it in next week for them to plug it in to see what’s going on. Fingers crossed!!!

Have you bitten the bullet yet and what was the result if you did?

Ken,

Well I have had this weekend off so I took it into the dealer.
They plugged her in and confirmed that it was the exhaust sensor that was tripping the engine light on, however they said they could not explain why the light is turning its self off as it should stay on if the car is spitting out high emissions/fuel.
They reset the computer for me and told me to keep an eye on it (it seems to be the same old story) or he said they could replace the sensor and see if that corrects it but would not guarantee it would stop the light from coming on.
On hearing that advise I opted for the keep an eye on it as to be honest I don’t think I have the cash to truly tackle the problem at the moment (due to Xmas) & I don’t want to open Pandora’s box and then find out its something else which I don’t have the funds to correct it.
It’s looking like late December January when I will have the time to let them loose with her.

Dont think i would worry too much. Seems like an irritation rather than a major problem.
