Does anyone have any experience of Lotus at Silverstone in terms of service work? As it is now a Caterham dealer I am considering using it for some work on my 7 and am looking for recommendations

I wouldn’t. Really wouldn’t. Two bad experiences with them have put me off using them-shame as they started off so well.

To balance out the previous comment, my own experience is much better.

I have a 15 month old Lotus that I got from new, but that wasn't supplied originally by Silverstone.

They have been looking after me for the last 12 months and have worked on about 6 warranty jobs, all of which have been rectified successfully. I recently had my first proper service carried out by them.

I have found them easy to deal with, very knowledgeable and generally helpful and keen to get my issues resolved.

They also come across as enthusiasts of the brand as well, which I like.

If you go onto the Lotus Forums there is a lot of love for Silverstone on there and I don't recall seeing much in the way of negative or bad reviews.

That said, if you dig deep enough, you will always find someone that has received bad service in their opinion from most dealers, but in the case of Silverstone, I suspect these would few and far between.

Of course, there’ll be good and bad for every place.

However, I hope people understand that damaging my wheels on two separate visits, the second time point blank denying it in a dismissive manner, despite me presenting them with date stamped pictures of the undamaged, pristine wheels taken in their car park when I arrived that morning, leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

Enthusiastic they may be, dishonest they also are in my book-they took photos of the damage and tried to claim that it was like that when it came in! They then tried to claim it was down to the “poor” refurbishment carried out when they scratched the wheels the first time. No, it’s down to someone being careless with tools!

Allon White in Cranfield get my vote-they were superb when I had my S1. Only reason I used Silverstone was because my S3 was still under warranty.

This is the first time I’ve posted about this on a forum-I won’t go on a forum with the sole purpose of starting a post slating a business, but if someone asks, I’m not going to give a glowing referral to a place which quite frankly, has a stinking attitude and questionable work practises.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you feel the need to take pictures of the wheels in the car park?

Don't get me wrong, I'm really fussy about my cars and also have a good look around them after they have been into a garage. I'm the bloke that parks in the far corner of a car park and I never like to the leave the car with someone any longer than necessary, but I'm just intrigued as to why you were almost anticipating that they would cause damage to the vehicle......

I too have taken photos of wheels and mileage when dropping a car off. Last time I dropped my BMW off I had a sharp pointed ding in the door when I picked it up. Went in to complain and they said I had to prove it was them !! Luckily it was in for a door handle cable being replaced and when I said the ding was from the inside out just below the door handle they admitted a junior had slipped with a tool. Made me go nuts they knew and tried to deny it. Last two times I have had tyres replaced the alloys have been damaged.

Most garages do not give a toss.

I do understand that mindset.......

I'm always a bit anxious when I take one of our cars in for something to be done.

I've had wheel lug holes gouged out with the nut runner socket on a few occasions and rim damage when taking the tyres off.

The only place I had as near to 100% confidence was when I used to take my old 911 back in the day into Tony at Dove house.

On our current cars, I've now taken to leaving a laminate on the front seat asking for the car not to be washed and I now only use a particular independent tyre and exhaust company in Milton Keynes that has so far successfully replaced 3 or 4 sets of worn tyres for me without causing damage.

I think dealers often forget we are also interested in how the car looks, as well as how it drives and don't always look after the car correctly when carrying out the repairs.

I'm sure even the best dealers have failed some customers at some point.

I have had nothing but exemplary service from Lotus Silverstone. My Lotus is a daily driver as was my previous one. Both looked after by Lotus Silverstone.

I don't have a single complaint.

They are often voted as the best Lotus Dealers on TLF

An example - my car went in with intact A pillars, after the service and a few other jobs, as I picked it up a noticed a hairline crack in one A pillar trim. I went back in and asked Matt to come and have a look. His view was that he didn't see how they may have done it, but replaced it FOC anyway. (This is on a model where A pillar cracks are a known fault).

He could easily denied all responsibility and said it's a weak point, it was probably cracked before. But no arguments, they just sorted it.

This is what I meant when I was originally trying to balance the negative review.

Clearly Captain slow has had issues, but on the whole, Silverstone receive very good/consistent reviews

Anticipating because they’d damaged the wheels the previous year, so to (hopefully) save any argument, I took some photos. Pictures tell a thousand words.

The trust had been broken when they did the damage the previous year, but to be fair they did sort it then. I know these things happen (I used to run a service department), so was prepared to give them a second chance.

Thing is-it’s not even so much the mistake/negligence that annoys me, it’s the absolute stinking attitude when despite being presented with irrefutable evidence (a time and date stamped photo with the location showing on a iPhone) they tried to deny and cover it up. I’d be more forgiving if they’d held their hands up, apologised and sorted it willingly.

I fully appreciate there’s plenty of Lotus Silverstone fans who’ve had good service, and that’s great. I’ve got no problem with that-if you get good service somewhere, you carry on using them. smile
