Lotus supercharges Exige 240R

Exige power boosted to a stonking 240bhp

Lotus Sport, the performance division of Lotus Cars, has developed the Lotus Sport Exige 240R, a limited edition high performance sportscar with total global build volumes kept strictly to 50 cars.

With a supercharged, intercooled high-revving engine producing over 240bhp and over 170lb-ft of torque, the Lotus Sport Exige 240R reaches 60 mph in under four seconds and 100 mph in less than 10 seconds, topping out at 155mph. At top speed, Lotus' advanced aerodynamics produce 113Kg of downforce increasing grip, stability and safety.

The 50 versions of the Lotus Sport Exige 240R will be built as post registration official factory conversions of new Lotus Exiges. Up to 40 of these cars will be sold in the EU and the balance is intended to be predominantly sold in Japan. The suffix of 240R indicates the approximate horsepower of the engine, conservatively rounded down from the actual figure of 243bhp. Dry weight is about 930Kg, said Lotus, and the power to weight is some 261 hp / tonne.

All 50 cars will be built to order and to further identify and maintain the exclusivity of the Lotus Sport Exige 240R, they will only be available in Sport Yellow or Sport Black – both unique and exclusive colours specifically blended to denote the brand colour scheme of Lotus Sport.

New lightweight five spoke forged alloy wheels are of a slightly wider section to the standard Exige wheel to accommodate the optional extra, track-only specification slick tyres as well as the Yokohama A048 tyres, which come as standard. The wheels are painted in "Satin Black" for the Sport Yellow painted version of the Lotus Sport Exige 240R and "High Power Silver" for the Sport Black painted version.

In addition to the powerful four-cylinder engine, the Lotus Sport Exige 240R also includes specially developed Lotus Sport parts including upgraded brakes, stiffer springs and 2-way adjustable Ohlins dampers with ride height adjustment, an adjustable front anti-roll bar, twin oil coolers and an Accusump.

The Lotus Sport Exige 240R features a unique interior trim in black with Lotus Sport Yellow highlights in leather. A unique numbered Lotus Sport build plate is fitted to the aluminium chassis member on the passenger side. The interior also includes sports seats, driver and passenger four-point harnesses which are fitted to a cross bar that is part of the motorsport specification T45 roll bar.

Lotus Sport will build the Lotus Sport Exige 240R within its facilities at the Group Lotus Headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk. This facility, located in the centre of the famous Hethel Test Track, has a great history of producing bespoke versions of Lotus products and can list the Lotus Sport Exige 400 hp racecar and over 100 Elise and Exige racing cars in its portfolio.

The Lotus Sport Exige 240R will cost £43,995.

Oh, why won't they put this into general production? That thing would eat 911s on track!

Is it just me that thinks that 240/170 is not exactly huge for a supercharged motor? NA 1.8 K series with hydraulic cams can be pushing 210/160 without too much trouble...

Hi there,

Agree but not sure if the Bhp is the hole story, I'm sure this is a real track/road tool, as we all already know the Exige is pretty rapid in standard form let alone with these extra's

Unfortunately the k series goes 'pop' easily though... Toyota engine should be a bit more reliable.

Agreed - this should be what the Exige is as standard.....if enough were made, the cost could come down..........and I'd get one

Most say it is getting rather on the lardy side!!! not really anything like the original Elise concept - ie light! My Noble is not a lot heavier and has a load more power.... For that kind of money you can buy a second hand noble that only has a few miles on the clock and is less than a year old. If they wound it up to 300BHP then that might be worth it.

This is what the Exige 2 should have been for £34K.
£44K is way too expensive for a stripped down 4cyl powered sports car, whatever the performance figures.

Still want one though. I reckon the black one with silver wheels and those yellow calipers will look the biz! Interior looks great too. Seats look fantastic.

Agree. Its what most have been waiting for. Its could have been more poweful yes, but Lotus have obviously tried and tested it and for them it works or they wouldn't have built it. It should be their normal model.

At £43k its way too expensive and its firmly in Noble's and T350's hunting ground. Much as I adore this little Lotus it wouldn't be on the list

£10k less however, and there would be nothing close. Yes I accept that Lotus is trying to claw back its development costs over a short term (50 cars) but if it made it into full stream production they could reduce the price. Hopefully this will happen. Still bloody beautiful though

I want one! I agree, price tag a bit hefty but how much would I love to get one of those on a track

I agree all round, its the car that should have been the exige 2 from the start and at 35k people would buy it, but for £44k or whatever, the cheaper second hand noble will get the vote. Im sure they will sell all 50 though quite easily as there are enough people out there with too much money to waste who will want one.

But there must be a converaion kit out there for less than 10k over the price of the exige.

930kg! I thought the Elise was meant to be light, I was expecting a weight of around 750kg! How much does a standard S1 Elise weigh?

What's that - a £10k-14k premium over the standard Exige? Far too steep for a supercharger conversion, even with the adjustable suspension. Most GOOD a-market s'charger conversions for 4-pot cars come in at about £4-5k.

You could take a boggo S1 Exige, ditch the K for a Honda K20A (Civic Type R engine), fit a supercharger, adjustable suspension...and still have change from the cost of an ordinary S2 Exige. And it would be as quick and fun as this one...and look better!

I think Lotus need to be more objective about their pricing. I'm sure this car will be a fantastic drive and beat just about any road car with lap times, but at the end of the day it's still a four-pot.
Ok, it might have the same performance as a 3 litre, but I bet given the straight choice between a screaming 4-pot and a glorious howling 6 cylinder for the same performance and same money, everyone would choose the six.
Also a £44K car should have some gleaming expensive looking alloys, not those painted black cheap jobs.

Lotus have actually lost the plot now. I'm not doubting their engineering ability by any means but the 240R is too expensive. As someone else on the thread mentioned, this is biting in to Noble territory pricewise and that's possibly not a sensible move.

Yeah, that 400bhp Sport Exige is one of the most fantastic looking machines ever. Why can't they make a plastic body version of that? Evem with 240 horses I reckon people would kill for it!
