I guess the question for you is not what Lotus can do, with the constraints an oem has to work to, but what you could do starting with 3.5 litres...
I would turbo it to give it more power, this would also lower the CG of the engine by having the weight of the supercharger and charge cooler off the top of the engine and run a proper gearbox with a north/south layout. This is just a crap design for a new car....

I should immediately follow that up by saying that with all of their current range, I think that Lotus punch well above their weight, both in terms of performance and handling compared to other cars for the same money and also in qualitative terms of how good the cars are to drive. For example, having driven the Exige S and Cayman S I would genuinely rather own and drive an Exige S, despite the Cayman's theoretical advantages in terms of CofG etc.
I just hope that Matt Becker's departure doesn't make itself felt in how the cars are to drive...
The only changes to the 311 is a re-body that I can tell.. Handling should be the same since nothing has changed. If they are gaining 10 seconds a lap on the Evora S there must be something wrong with the Evora S they were testing....
I still think they should have turboed the 1.8 ltr 2ZZ and added some serious tire to take advantage of light weight and mechanical grip instead of theoretical high speed downforce...
Ya know something like this...after all they had the right car but they didn't know what to do with it..

Sadly I can't access that website at work, but I do seriously doubt that it's just a re-body of the 2-Eleven (as much as I'd like that to be the case because I'm selling mine!).
With the news and reveal of the new Lotus 311, my excitement lead me to look up videos of it on YouTube. If you go to the link that I posted you will find a video of the CEO of Lotus cars unveiling the new 311 and giving a short speech. Now, is it just me, or do you feel that this speech from this man, who is a CEO mind you, gave a very robotic and dry and unenthusiastic speech? For God's sake, put some personality into it. Rile the crowd up!!
"I am very excited to introduce to all of you our all new Lotus 311..." - said in slow monotone voice. "And I am very pleased to announce to all of you that this new car represents a small yet important peek into the near future of our determined company... We here at Lotus Cars are thrilled...
LOL yes mr CEO i-forgot-his-name, you look very excited. LOL
