dodgy seals and hood leakage (mind you, they all do that)

wheel bearings

petrol tank/lines
tracking/suspension set-up

general abuse

Other than that I think they`re pretty bombproof.

They all have noisy power steering and sloppy gearchanges. Don't underestimate the cost of a new rear light or the availabilty of the window winder mechs.

You could always come and look at ours then use it as benchmark on which to judge others !

Ask me a question on Porsches and I`m your man, we just took one in as p/x the other day so all of a sudden I`m an Elan expert !!

When I saw the thread title I was sure it was going to be Muncher posting. I had no idea you were in the market too, Corin.

Yep, they do (almost) all leak. The S2 is less prone than the SE (ie. S1).

Not really much to go wrong with them and a full mechanics manual is readily available if you are into fixing things yourself.

Rear (and front for that matter) suspension wishbones

If the rears are rusted through (common occurance on SE's) looking at £400-£500

Gear cables, they snap, look for a bill for a fairly recent replacement

as mention by others yes they leak (by varying amounts) check condition of rubber seals (there not cheap to replace

Check condition of rear disc & calipers, they do very little work and can seize, Rear discs are also expensive to replace.

Gurgling on PAS is normal so dont be offput

Check the car drives straight n true and stops in a straight line under heavy braking

HPI it! Lots of cars been subject to insurance damage claims.

Cars are on the whole pretty reliable with relatively few weak spots, buy a good one and they are very cheap fun motoring.

In 14mths and 6,000 miles Ive replaced exhaust centre section and rear box and front pads and discs, other than routine servicing thats my lot

Err, that'll be Muncher.

One could just as easily ask "what's a corin denton posting?"

well white kicks it for around £500 or so, so I'd say if in good order and requiring minimum expenditure £6000-£6500 (if mint) would be a fair price

another point to look at is when the cam belt was last changed as this is a couple of hundred to do

Wishbones, wishbones, WISHBONES!

Surprised these have only got a small mention, they weren't galvanised on the original cars, fronts still aren't hence they do rust through. Have a real good poke around with a screwdriver to check they are solid, better still hunt for a car that's had them done. The wishbones themselves are about £300 per corner, you've got VAT and fitting on top of that, don't expect much change from £2500 if you need all four.

Hood seals are about £300-400 per set and tricky to get hold of. Check those GTA V6 rear lights for damage, they'll set you back over £200 each.

Check the brakes work well and it doesn't pull to one side, master cylinders/calipers are pricey and although they're GM they're from US cars so you can't nip down the local scrappy for a used one.

One final word of warning, I bought one that'd been fitted with 17" rims and ultra low profile tyres. Looked great but wrecked the rear stub axles and bearings as well as ruining the handling, back on original wheels now and handles like it should.

Not sure, always fancied one probably a short term thing just to get it out of my system.

Update on car:- 1991 Turbo SE, 75k, FSH 80% Lotus (guy said not full but he only meant the Lotus part), new mohair roof, full leather, full electrics, alarm, Tracker, Kenwood CD, unscuffed alloys, recent cam belt, massive history file and it is superb!!

Why anyone would want to buy an MX5 is beyond me, these are class!

Some photos from the drive to work this morning!

I sold my Elan at the end of the summer because I just wasn't using her as much as I should have been once the other half got the Elise finished.

Christ, I want it back now though!!!!

Missing our creature comforts are we? Have to say I wouldnt swap mine for a std 118bhp Elise (they feel soo breathless past 70mph) maybe a 111S but I'm not totally convinced
