The engine on the elan seems to run fairly cool when driving, at about 1 quarter up the guage. However, the temp increases up to around 2 thirds when the car is left idling before the fan kicks in. The main issue is that even when the temp has increased, with the heating set to max and the blower on, the air comming out is barely tepid?!

The car has done 80k and runs sweet otherwise?

Any ideas??

It could be a dodgy heater valve - a known issue with M100s as they get older. If so, it's not an expensive fix.

The best advice I can give you is to go to www.lotuselancentral.com. You'll find plenty of info there and a lot of people who will help you to diagnose the problem with your Elan.

No. The 'stat and the heater valve are two different things. The heater valve shuts the coolant off from the heater matrix when the cabin heater control is set to the cold position. The original heater valves are metal and can corrode. A plastic replacement part is available at reasonable cost.

I have a low temp fan switch which is one the best upgrades I have done to my Elan
I used sit in traffic waiting and wondering if the fans would ever kick in but with the low temp switch as soon as I'm stopped after a drive they kick in to cool my engine,,,,all ready had one head-gasket failer dont wont another frown
