How is it that lotus always, but always get it right?
Whence comes this midas touch that can be applied to Protons, Vauxhalls, countless other cars with dull, inert chassis to turn them into driver's cars? When every single lotus ever is apparently a wonderful steer, how can Audi for one (and VW generally) always get it wrong? Peugeot spent years building a rep. by building cars with built-in rakeability. Have they forgotten how to do it?
It's a black art, you might say, all very hush-hush, but look at these companies falling on their faces time and time again. They're wasting millions and harming reputations by releasing cars which are intrinsically dull, regardless of the power available.
Chapman is long gone but his principles, his insights, his dedication to driving enjoyment live on. I for one am very grateful that such a small curiosity of a company seems to have mastered one of the most challenging aspects of modern business : the retention of knowledge.

Because Audi set their cars up to understeer, so that their customer base don't get caught out & complain - the downside of Lotuses amazing chuckability is spinability. Every trackday that I have been to with Lotuses has them spinning in droves (well a couple anyway). They are great fun to drive though.

Lotus get it right because their great and even though chapman one of historys greatest creators and inventors beside Leonardo Davinci and Arstotle is sadly dead .But he got his formula for building cars right from the start.Now all his genious has gone into Producing the Elise which beats everything From Peugeots - Pagani Zondas.I wonder what the Elise would have been like if they had a bigger budget to build the Elise and their engine would of been supercharged or something instead they left it to Turbotechnics and another host of upgraders to enhance a masterpeice.

Please HungryJim could you tell me why you are saying such utter jibberish?!! How the hell can you compare an Elise with a family hatchback and a 300k supercar, and go on to say it beats them? What do you mean?
Are you having races with your Corgi toys at home and posting the results here?
Also I'd like to point out that Aristotle was best know for his theological works, his mathematical studies and his philosophy. He was not a bloody inventor! Now, not being ancient Greek myself I don't know whether he did knock up the odd horse racing cart in his toolshed over the weekend but I think that's best left for other people to debate.
Also if you are going to complement Colin Chapman - it's spelt GENIUS!!!

Chapman was a very good designer, but I'm glad I never had to work for him, because everyone I've ever heard talk about him describes him as a right royal pain in tha arse.
As for the Elise, not my cup of tea, give me the Pagani, anytime!
In reply to the original question, IMHO Lotus built great racing cars for the road, but have yet to build a good family saloon, MPV or off road 4x4, and long may that state of affairs continue.
