I keep find my self looking at late 90s Jaguar XJ6s on the various classified sales sites. They seem alot of car for the money but I've never owned a Jag or have any experience of the Oz market .

Luxury motoring and timeless style or hopeless, unreliable money pit?

Any advice from past, present or future owners?

Cheers

This was GBP / UK pounds. So about $4500 in todays money. X300's were more reliable though. Nice drive, poor quality. Definitely a money pit.

I have owned a couple of Jags over the years.
One - a Series III XJ V12 and was told before I bought it that Jags were a money pit and terrible for reliability. However - maybe I was lucky - I had no problem with the car for 3 years - and the servicing was not not different from any other European car. I really do think it is the specific car rather than the make you need to look at carefully. I also have an E-Type 1973 and so far - it hasn't cost me much either - but then I don't drive it that regularly. Post 2000 models are said to be the most reliable anecdotaly.

I've got a 95 x300 XJ6 4.0 Sovereign and it has been one of those general good buys that is a pleasure to own and drive.

High kms as the previous owner was doing a lot of country/interstate driving in it but it also has a $6k injection lpg system on it. Still magic carpet smooth and quiet so we tend to use it a lot since it just cruises so nicely.

It has had a couple of little niggles over the last 18 months, a couple of coil packs have needed replacing and a couple of sensors but the straight 6 is very easy to work on compared to the v12 and later v8s so not at all bad for a car approaching 320,000km on its original engine and box.

I had an XJ6, an XJ8 and a v8 XJR back in the UK at various times and the v8s were no end of grief compared to the 6's.

So yeah, I would definitely recommend one, especially if you can find a good late x300 from when Ford had sorted out the reliability and build quality issues but before they went to the V8 engines with Nikasil liners, plastic water pumps and timing chain tensioners and sealed for life gearboxes.
