visiting adelaide may/june
Discussion
I am a UK PHer and will be visiting Adelaide with work for around 6 weeks in may/june. I will not be able to bring my 911 or my motorbike but will have a hire car to get around. I may be able to get a few days off as well as the weekends. Any suggestions where I should go while there? Any events or sights that I shouldn't miss? Any ideas for a good tourist trip for my few days off?
You can spend time in and around Adelaide no probs, but why not grab a cheap flight and see a bit more of OZ while you're here. Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane are only a 1-2 hour flight away. Cheap fares on Virginblue or if you don't mind going real budget check out Tiger Airways. Fly in grab a rental and see what your missing on the east coast.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Not a lot to do in Adelaide really.... There are a pair of gentleman's clubs down the main strip though, the White Horse and something else. Go in the other one, not only is it free entry, but you get to *ahem* see more than you do in t'other one.
GOR is nice to do, but a fair drive from 'laide. It'll take you a day to drive to the start of it, you want 2 days along it, and then a good days driving on the way back. And it really deserves to be done in summer when the colours are bright, rather then in the miserable weather Melbourne has had recently.
City breaks in Sydney or Melbourne would be a good suggestion, both are different, but very nice cities. A bit more lively than where your staying. Sydney has more to do in the way of museums, sights etc, but Melbourne has better arts and music scene. As said earlier, Sydney will have warmer weather.

Seriously, knock Off early on Friday and fly out for the weekend. Melbourne and Sydney only 1.5 hours away. Even Brisbane is just over 2 hours by air. Really just fly anywhere for a least a couple of weekends.

Adelaide for six weeks
Definitely take some flights and see somewhere else, Sydney and Melbourne being the obvious choices. Adelaide's charms wear a little thin after a while.
I live in Ade and would be more than happy to meet up for a drive or a social beer somewhere. I did post this before, but my posts are erratic with the work server!Definitely take some flights and see somewhere else, Sydney and Melbourne being the obvious choices. If i was only in Aus for a few weeks i would also fly out and see other places, especially as its getting damn cold in the mornings now! BrisVegas would be on the list for sure
As to Adelaides charm wearing thin, i think it would take more than 6 weeks to lose its appeal. Had a Pom mate here for a week this month and he loved it. We did spend some time on Kangaroo Island tho, and you have to enjoy wildlife and scenery
That time of year the only place to be is the tropics at Great Barrier Reef, Queensland.
Grab a flight to the Whitsunday Islands/Airlie beach, or Cairns, & go snorkel in the clear tropical waters, check out the coral or sail a cat, & only put a shirt on occasionally, to avoid getting too much sun. That's where all the smart people will be.

thanks for the advice. Trip has been a bit delayed, but am flying out this weekend. Spending 6 weeks working in Adelaide, then a week travelling around with work (mainly Canberra), followed by 3 weeks holiday. Have arranged Sydney, Palm Cove (near Cairns) and then Surfers before flying back from Brisbane.
That should be good.
It will be the trade wind season, the south easters could be up a bit. It can get a bit bumpy on a trip out to the reef, so bring your sea sick pills. It's hard to enjoy a boat ride, while your feeding the fish.
It is worth doing the scenic train ride up to the table lands behind Cairns. That's a day trip, but it's worth hiring a car for a bit of sight seeing up there, & through the endless sugar cane fields around Cairns too.
Spend the time early to look at all the brochures of things to do. There is so much on offer you can't do it all, & it's a pity to find something you'd love, when there's no time left.

I am sure there will be loads to keep me busy in the last few weeks. It is finding interesting things to do in Adelaide that i am a little concerned about. My hire car in Adelaide looks like it will be a basic box, my company wouldn't pay for a V8 ute so i could have the real aussie experience!

In my experience it was things to do in the evening that was most limited, times I've been there I've been working so not after some great night life but something going on would be good. Canberra's no better, to be honest, it's the one place I'd put lower on the list than Adelaide. But with a car you can do things at the weekends, I'd also look at the budget airlines and think about going away for the odd weekend. It's a good time to go up to Cairns and Sydney is good, personally I'd give Surfer's a miss but then I'm not into beaches etc. Gassing Station | Australia | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
