shipping furniture etc
Discussion
Anyone on here have any experience of shipping furniture and household goods from UK to OZ have looked at a few shipping companies but cant really think how big a container we will require, or how to guess the size of all our goods together(3 bed house).
Question is do they collect goods from you and bill you the cost of the container space or do you get a container delivered and you fill it?

Used Crown in the past with a 20Footer (3 bed semi)- c £3.5K IIRC one way inc insurance. Came along 2/3 days before and wrapped everything, then the container turned up. All arrived safely, no problems.
Most folks I know who moved a few years back sold everything before they went, but given the dire state of the £, may be better to hold onto your stuff, without having to fork out over there.
Cheers

I'd echo those thoughts, when I moved over I sold most of my belongings so I minimised the cost of shipping, but then ended up buying the same stuff over here for much more than it would of cost me! Learn from my mistake at least.
Because of the above, I had about 15 tea crates (I'm single), so didnt get a container, so I cant help you there.
TNT magazine has a good list of shipping companies and some guidance in it, worth a look.

We moved to Sydney 7 weeks ago and used PSS. Can not fault them at all. They came to pack everything for 1.5 days then had the container delivered on the afternoon of the second day when the packed everything into the container and 8 weeks later it arrived in Sydney.
Nothing was broken at all which is amazing compared to my in laws who moved here in 2009 and had a lot of their belongings damaged.
Also PSS was very competitive against the other 2 companies that we had to quote.
All the best with your move.

We used Clark & Rose to handle our move from Glasgow->Sydney - they're based in Stirling.
Came to my house, we pointed at the things to be shipped, 2 hours (!) later it was loaded into the back of their van and they cheerily drove off.
The international receivers in Australia were Crown Relocations, who handled customs etc.
One week after the boat arrived, Crown delivered to our new house and unpacked it all - everything in perfect condition.
Company paid for it, so not sure of costs (think about £2K all in), but boy it was worth it for the service!

how about electrical items like tv,PS3,x box etc. Will they work over in oz? Im assuming they wont? Think well be selling all our stuff and just ship the personnal smaller belongings. But will be shipping the car. Anyone know the score with importing a mildly modded 350z in terms of registering the car in oz?
Also anyone know if you can carry your no claims to an oz insurer?

All eletronics kit will work.
TV's may need a freeview box to get TV (via HDMI, so that's cool).
It's all PAL over there too, the only issue is DVD regional coding.
Currently speaking to for shipping :-
Crown
Doree Bonner
Pickfords
PSS
Don't know about the car. I'd suggest not to bother. But that's just me.

I used Crown for belongings and the Tuscan (all in one 20' container). Did not bring beds, dining furniture etc as there was not room. Also anyone know if you can carry your no claims to an oz insurer?

I arranged the car paperwork - contact the relevent authority in the state you are importing to and they will let you know what paperwork you need (RTA for NSW had all the paperwork on their web site for a personal inport and $50 for processing). You will need to pay stamp duty and/or taxes depending on which state based on valuation by the customs.
Shannons had no problems with carrying over a UK no claims. There are only a few insurers who will deal with personal imports and I don't know about the modifications.
Look at prices on carsales.com.au to see if its worth bringing a car over.
