Looks like SWMBO has decided that we will be in Perth for 1st week of Feb (Chinese New Year - get outa Asia thing) and I have only ever been to Perth for Business so never ventured further than Airport / Hotel / Office / Nearby pubs and not been for a few years now.

Have 7 or 8 days and perhaps hiring a car, so - whats worth taking the effort to see? I have a few ideas but interested in what the PH yokles have to say before i throw anything in.

There would likely be some sort of motorsport on at that time of year.

Fremantle is always worth a day out, lots of bars, pubs, restaurants and shops and the markets if you go on a weekend.

Perth centre is a day or so out.

What sort of night life are you in to?

What ideas have you had to see so far?

Pubs, bars and nice food more my nightlife than out clubbing these days, that was my yoof in London.

Was thinking of vineyards or something (margeret river?) and perhaps some fishing (have access to sports fisherman for that)

ears motorsports you say... What sort and where and can I hide it behind something that the female radar can't instantly see through?

Sure we can get something going...At least me and Madaz will hehe

It will be hard to hide the motorsport behind something else. Most of our motorsport is in fairly remote areas with nothing else to see near by so you can't be all "oh lets take a drive this way" and 'accidentally' find a track to go to.

I think there is a night race on at Barbagallo at the start of February. There might also be some drag racing on at the motorplex...actually that one you could hide behind the pretence of going to see the Rockingham beach or Penguin Island or something.

Pubs, bars and restaurants is easy to set up. Give us the dates and we will get out st together...wont we irked

Sounds good ... think will flip through the travel guides now that i have some areas to work on wink

To be fair, SWMBO is not too bad on that sort of thing, as long as i give her a days shopping or some such.

BTW - any good car hire companies or just the usual Hertz / Avis etc?

John I had a night in the Holiday Inn earlier this year, we'd been to the food & wine expo and decided while there to make the most of it and not drive home. It is right in the CBD on Hay or Murray St.
I didn't expect much, just a place to kip but was pleasently surprised (we got a spa room) I can't remember exactly but I *think* it might have been around $200 incl breakfast (a bit hazy on that though hehe )
My car sits at home unused most of the time, might be able to use that for a few days if you can lower yourself to a Commodore (don't have the Monaro any more, sorry)
Cheers
Tim

Cheers for the offer on the commadore too, sure i can slum it, have been reduced from the porsche to a datsun also!! hehe

CBD hotels...Mountsbay Hotel which is more of a serviced apartment type set up but has good facilities. Free bus from outside to the centre or about 10-15 minutes walk.

Mantra on Hay is also a nice hotel / apartment type place. Close to restarants and bars.

Head to whatif.com and have a stooge around. Perth prices really vary depending on the time of day.

Motorsport wise..

29th has top fuel drags on at the motorplex and the 5th has Super Speedway and Demo Derby.

30th has drifting at Barbagallo

I am struggling to find much info, none of the clubs have got themselves in gear and published their 2011 events list.

OK got some me ideas, now just have to work in a few other bits for the missus!

She has mentioned Margaret River a few times for Vinyards and some tourist stuff.

1 - How long to drive there from Perth given that i assume i will not be able to belt along at 200km handing out RM50 of coffee money every time i see plod.
2 - Anywhere worth stopping off and seeing on the drive?
3 - anything well worth avoiding?
4 - how long (on a 9 / 10 day trip) to give to the place?

for a PH Pissup meet, am reconing either Sat 29th / Sun 30th in Perth or Fri 4th / Sat 5th in Freo (missus is may be Singaporean but doesn't give a stuff about chinese new year hehe )

It's a day nighter, so you'll have to catch the end of it on Star Cricket. I'm also thinking of doing Perth over CNY - any recommendations for cheap flights?
