Hi guys,

I'm an Australian who is currently working in London and will probably be returning home to Brisbane in just over 12 months time. Im keen to purchase a car here for the purpose of touring the UK / Europe and then shipping it home to sell.

I've done a fair bit of reading regarding the costs and requirements for importing a car. The one question I havent been able to answer is what compliance work will be required in Australia before I can register the car.

The only real thing ive read about is child restrains. Is that all that is usually needed? What about things like new ADR seatbelts, or replacing xenon headlights with standard ones etc?

Has anyone on here imported a late model (e92 etc) M3 or similar into Australia and had it registered in Queensland?

Id love to hear what hoops you had to jump through to get it on the road.

Cheers,

David.

Hi David,

I just imported my 2006 Aston V8 Vantage Coupe and did not have any issues with compliance, albeit a two seater. It is probably best for you to contact Kevin London of "Prestige New World" workshop in Rocklea, Brisbane who checks the vehicle for compliance and can carry out any compliance requirements. I did notice a BMW 6 series in his compound the week before my vehicle arrived.

When the time comes to import and you have obtained an import approval the easiest way to do it to Brisbane is:-

1. Richard Korge - Karman Shipping [Container & Insurance]
2. Steve White - Cargo OnLine [Port Clearance / Import Duty etc / *Landed Vehicle Valuation through Kevin London]
3. Kevin London - Prestige New World Workshop [*Landed Vehicle Valuation/Compliance/Safety Certificate/Car Registration.

The whole process will take approximately 8 weeks - 5 weeks for shipping - 3 weeks from landing to collection.

Regards

Steve

How much did this cost and is the cost worked on a percentage of the cars value?

You won't have any problems with a car of that age. The personal import route is very simple and I'd definately do it again given the chance. I imported my Esprit back in 06 from London to Adelaide. No problems encountered with anyone. Compliancing took all of 5 minutes - all i needed was a high brake light fitted. Basic cost of importing (shipping & Customs) and registering the car was about 20% of the original purchase cost.

David - Trev's friend? 200sx owner?

Trev mentioned you were looking to import an RS4/M3.

New workshop would be good, the old NPW workshop was a bit tight/full when I had my car done there.

Hi Matt,

Funny, I can't see my comment anymore! Maybe I did something wrong?

Here is the info of the New Prestige World workshop: 14 Mond Street, Thorneside QLD 4158. Phone is 07 3207 3300. Could someone let me know why my post disappeared?

Thanks

Roxy

Possibly seen as advertising which isn't allowed.

Oh now that I think about it yes someone probably thought I was advertising! Sorry wasn't my intention. We had so many people think we were in Rocklea still that some of them directed us to this forum and I found why when I searched for 'New Prestige World'.
Thanks Matt for your help.

I'm sure if you wanted to contribute to the big thread on importing cars to clear up any confusion in there without putting in links to your company then that's fine - just leave the link in your profile.

Personal is the way

doing it any other way tax alone is 10% then 5% (including the 10%) and then stamp which is 3% so thats 20% just in tax without shipping costs, transport, agency fee's, cleaning fee's compliance inspection fee's.

I too have imported an esprit and my costs were closer to 60% of the purchase price (not personal unfortunately)

Is the import tax cheaper on personal imports? Thought it was the same
