TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

DETAILED SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
for LARGE HAILSTONES, FLASH FLOODING and DAMAGING WIND
For people in the
Greater Wollongong and parts of the
Sydney Metropolitan and
Wollondilly/Wingecarribee areas.

Issued at 3:39 pm Monday, 8 November 2010.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 3:25 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Camden, Liverpool, Picton, Pt Kembla and Shellharbour.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the southeast.

They are forecast to affect Parramatta, Sutherland, Sydney Olympic Park, Kiama and Campbelltown by 3:55 pm and Sydney City, Sydney Airport, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Helensburgh by 4:25 pm.

Large hailstones, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and damaging winds are likely.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
  • Move your car under cover or away from trees.
  • Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
  • Keep clear of fallen power lines.
  • Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
  • Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
  • Unplug computers and appliances.
  • Avoid using the phone during the storm.
  • Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
  • For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

If you're in NSW and are thanking me for the warning, you are welcome.

If you're in Warwickshire and are taking the piss, it's pretty clear that the warning is not meant for you, hence posting it in the Australia forum.

If you are in Warwickshire and think a bit of hail doesn't do any harm, think again.

Bloody 'ell!!!!!! I'll be in Woolongong from the 22nd of December for a month, hope the storms are gone by then! Good luck guys.

Hey Bob, thought I'd not seen you around for a while, didn't realise you were down under. You got the Tiv out there? If you are around Sydney during Dec / Jan we could meet for a beer?

Hmm, and if you were planning to ride from the city back home to the Northern Beaches around 5pm yesterday, it was a fine idea to turn right just before you got on the Bridge and get the ferry!

I was just leaving the office to race the storm home when one of my colleague said they'd just got caught in hail west of the city. That was all the incentive I needed to get to Circular Quay and the comfort of the MV Narrabeen biggrin Glad I did too cos just as I got to Bridge St I got caught in a downpour that soaked me through in about 30 sec.

I also lived in Warwickshire and remember a hail storm that wiped out 90% of VW Coventry's floor stock. Had a friend spend a very long time with a hammer and filler on brand new cars to patch them up before selling them on. Dont think it was as severe as that pic tho!!!

I think we may have been in the same downpour. I walked out the door of my office in Bridge St thinking I would run home, which is always a nice way to finish the day. Realised I forgot my house keys, turned around and whoosh, massive downpour.

Ended up leaving the office at 6.30 instead and got the 247 back to Mosman and had a beer instead.

There's still rather a lot of hail damaged cars driving around down here after the big one we had come through a couple of months back.

Vicroads put in a special excemtion from the usual write-off proceedure due to the huge number of cars being written off purely for hail damage and being bought back as salvage by their owners to be re-registered.

Our pad in Surry Hills looks right out over the city and Botany's runways and I sat all last night marvelling at the size & ferocity of the lightening ... truly spectacular ... for about 2 hours you could see the lightening behind and above the cloud tops and it was like a sci-fi movie...

I was extremely glad I was not on any of the planes that were taking odd-flightpaths to probably dodge the storm ... seeing that lightning from the passenger cabin would have been pant filling!
