As part of our current emigration thoughts, I'm looking at salaries and rental costs etc. and trying to work out the day-to-day money side of things. However, in order to do this I need a bit of help from you guys who are already there.

Can you give me an idea of all the monthly bills I can expect?

Things like the Aussie version of council tax, that sort of thing.

Obviously it's swings and roundabouts, some stuff is cheaper, some more expensive. Also depends on what you spend your money on.

I've been told (even though the exchange rate is about 1.6) to use 2.2 as a multiplication factor.

So what ever you think is comfotable in the UK, x2.2 for the same sort of level in Oz.

I am in Rockingham south of Perth.

Council rates are about $1000 and keep rising. This varies from area to area.

Gas for us is about $100 qtr, we have solar hot water.

Electricity is $100 month.

Water is about $600 a year.

My 2006 diesel Astra is about $600 to insure and cost $18k a few months back with 35k on the clock. My heavily modified MX5 is about the same to insure with limited usage.

Beer can be anywhere from $7 to $12 a pint and can be just as much for a bottle.
Eating out is expensive.

Overall I would say that as average wage earners we live far more comfortably than we could ever hope to in the UK. I don't have a lot of money left at the end of the week but I get to play with my race car and sit in my nice, comfy house and go on holiday when I feel like it.

Hope that helps.
