G'day cobbers!

Well just thought I'd check in after being back in the UK for a week and I can announce that, imho, the UK is ... ste smile weathers been ok but it doesn't half feel hectic here compared to Perth, fuels £1.22 a litre (no surprises) but the worst thing is the massive sense of a country in the financial poo. Getting a job on anything approaching half decent cash looks difficult.

So, no current job also means nothing exciting to drive (for now) and therefore after a trip to Blackbushe on wed I am now the proud, but bored, owner of a 2007 Ford Focus TDCI 1.6 HDI 90 bhp style, 57k miles, fsh, dark grey for the sum of £5000 ($8000!). £90 a year tax and the state and vehicle economy chose this one. Also nice to note the £1000 insurance bill as no ncd here and a massive rise in premiums here, or so I was told. Good enough to get the car off the auction site but I shall be shopping around. Damn Aussie girlfriends drivers license frown

Gonna see how it pans out but so far I miss Perth terribly and never shall slate a brand power advert again. Will I return? We'll see but there's a 6 mth target to settle and if all is not well here then...

Sorry to take pleasure from your misery, but I find this very reassuring in terms of my own decisions.

Good luck sir.

Good to hear from you mate.

I'm the same as google, it is interesting to hear a none rose tinted opinion.

The Focus makes sense though, its going to be perfectly comfy, reliable and cheap to charge up the motorway in. The insurance stings a bit though!

I guess you have landed just as the 'entertainment season' is ending and the weather is getting crap but you still have fireworks and a proper christmas to look forward to...though you might miss the Aus style christmas?

I would try and wait until you have done a summer there: motorsport, airshows, festivals, Le Man, Goodwood etc. Maybe get a long to a few PH events?

How do you think you will get on with English people now you are all 'no worries'?

My sister and her long term boyfriend moved over about a week and a half ago. Long term thing as well.

All seems great at the moment, but he works in finance and left a great, well paying job here as a fund manager, so I'm not sure how things will work out.

6 months is not enough time to re settle back into the uk lifestyle.

Hectic sounds nice to me smile

Focus sounds like a perfect tool. shame it doesn't have a turbo tho smile How much do the XR5's (ST's) go for in the land of expensive fuel?

Not sure about the UK, but i have spent 7 8 months in the last 2 3/4 years out of work, and it was not for the want of trying to find work.

Hoping to go the other way soon.

From Fleet (do you need a house) to Perth.

Good luck, I can see it'll only get worse in the UK over the next 6 months.

Steve - promise will get in touch soon!

Not a big answer as on phone but a week on the desire to return is even stronger. A's right 6 months isnt long enough but having moved to bournemouth where I'm from settled is better but big issue is work and it's looking terrible.

I came for emotionally the right reasons but the harsh economics of life might force me to return. More jobs in Perth and both myself and partner can earn 40-50% more over there for same jobs.

The other issue is that the longer I am jobless the harder financially to return so less chance to afford to undertake the inevitable resettlement. Also ihave found that 3 years out of uk has almost reset me professionally so the sooner I return to oz the easier to get back to work and life.

Return is not set but looking likely...

Oh and cars wise yeah it's cheap here but no job/badly paid means no good super, house, lifestyle let alone car! I'm paying over £1000 insurance on a 57 plate 1.6 90bhp diesel so anything good is a long way off.

And I havent even mentioned the weather wink

Sorry to hear things are harder than you expected.

How's the girlfriend finding it?

Just remember the reason why you returned and try not to make a snap decision. But even if you do return back to Perth, at least you will know you tried it, did the right thing, and you could always fly back to visit the UK a couple of times a year.

Sorry to hear it's tough. All our friends tell us how bad things have got recently and worse on the way with all the gov jobs about to go apparently.

On a broader note I really do think we're seeing a shift in the world away from europe whose power and money is weakening dramatically and over to Asia. Business is on it's way but people will follow soon. It used to be the Australians who came to the UK to earn money and now it's the other way round but soon we'll all be off to Asia. Kind of like a globalisation of nations not just companies where we might be born in one country but we earn our living globally.

Off to learn mandarin now biggrin

I think you are right there Custard. I don't think Australia will be any sort of dominant world power but we are in the right place to be feeding off of the shift to Asia. I just hope this gummymint doesnt squander and waste the growth that comes with it.

Sorry to see you are struggling Pommy. You did the right thing for the right reasons in moving there and all you can do is try.

Now go to a tea house and have a proper Devonshire tea with real clotted cream!!
