Hi all,

I'm moving to Perth in a few weeks (land 2nd of December), and whilst I've currently got my TVR Chimaera up for sale here the more I think about it the more I'm tempted to ship her over (costs permitting), as the consensus is that if or when I sold her in Oz I'd get much more for her... driving

Was just wondering - any views on what she may be worth in Australia? Ad is below:

Also, tips from anyone who has shipped a car over relatively recently would be much appreciated (what is involved, recommendations of companies to use etc.) thumbup

Cheers,

Neil.

Griff is an easy $60k here, used to be $100..

Chimp should be similar, but time to sell might be an issue if you are in a hurry.

You have owned it for less than a year so you can not bring it in as a personal import.

Looking at the search for companies importing cars there is currently nobody doinbg TVR's... http://raws.infrastructure.gov.au/rawswebpublic/RA...

Looks like a no go fella frown

Thanks mate - I am aware of that minimum, so I'm looking at perhaps storing it from end of Nov till Feb which would satisfy that criteria.

I think the thing which may scupper it is my Visa - as I'm coming on a 417 subclass (working holiday) visa, and I found a page stating who is eligible and I don't think I would be, unless I subsequently got sponsored (http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/importing_vehicles/general/EligibilityCriteria_2.aspx#five)

The final nail may be cost - after reading one of the other threads about what is cost the chap with an Elise I don't think I can justify the cost (http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=139&t=526846&mid=0&nmt=Importing%20a%20car%20to%20Australia%20-%20All%20the%20facts...%20Hopefully!)

Thanks for your input though!

The rule is "owned and used" for 1 year. The authorities want every page of your passport and an explaination of time out of the country. They even wanted to know why I was in Aus for 2 weeks in the year before I came out.

I you are only coming for a short time you might be able to bring the car in on a temporary basis. May e snookered though if you did get sponsorship to stay longer.

If you're on a 417 you're stuffed alas - minimum criteria for personal import is to be on a 457 but with an intention of applying for perm residency once you arrive.

The same Chims have been up for sale in some cases for ~2years or more now it seems on carsales.com.au so it seems very very rare that they actually change hands so i wouldn't recommend bringing it in with the intention of selling it even if you were moving permanently.

They're also damn good fun to run out here, so you probably wouldn't end up wanting to part with it anyway.. smile

TVRs are very rare in Oz, they dont have a following like here, I dont think many people have even heard of them. They were sold locally in Oz for a while, very expensive. There seems to be a huge price difference between Oz and here, I spose it must be Aust govt duty and tax that makes cars like double the price in Oz.

If you could import your TVR as personal import it would be worth more in Oz, although being a UK car it will never be worth same as an Oz delivered car. For a personal import to Oz the best type of car would be aomething like a Aston Martin DB9 or Porsche GT3, both well represented in the market and very expensive compared to UK. I was looking at used Aston Martin DB9 say 2005 model, around 50K in UK in OZ same car is AUD 220K, at current exchange rate that would be 130K pounds, so personal import from here to Oz def good thing.
