Am trying to find some websites where I can see prices and order online for a set of front tyres for the wifes car.
Very frustrating as there does not seem to be much of a service available online. After 30 minutes searching, I can not even come up with a price for the tyre sizes I need
Any recommendations for some good sites?

Not as good as the UK/USA for tyres on the internet.
Could try ebay and the trading post for prices, a lot of cheap import stuff on there.
You will have get on the phone to get prices from the majors.

Past two places my ute has been have both managed to damage trim on my car somewhere and I don't mean scratched either. Hub cap broken off as they had obviously never changed one before. Seat trim damaged on the next visit. One of them has already shut down!

I would thoroughly recommend www.tirerack.com I bought 4 x Continentals for my Lexus and saved more than $600 over local tyres (all costs considered). They were quick, professional and dealt with all of the paperwork with customs. As long as the tyres are less than $999 in value you should be OK. It took 7 days to get them here and the tyres cost me just over $132 to get fitted (the biggest con, but this is Perth Australia after all).
It wouldn't surprise me if the local shops use tirerack and then just sell on to us with a fat margin.

I have heard a lot of good things about tirerack.com. Once I have decided on wheel / tyre sizing for the MX5 I am only going to buy tyres there.
I find the easiest way to get prices here is to just ring around. None of the tyre shops seem to reply to online enquiries / emails. I would do your own research as to which tyres you want though and just tell them exactly what you want and in which size then keep calling around asking them to beat each others prices. I got Bob Jane to give me 205 / 50 / 15 Bridgestone Adrenaline for $155 each instead of the $185 they originally quoted me. I also had to tell them that I only wanted those tyres and to stop trying to sell me Bob Jane 'allrounders'.

I bought some KU36 from these guys, fast delivery, good service. They sent the wrong size but sent replacements right away and got a courier to pick up the wrong ones. I'll buy from there again:

I've heard good things about them as well. Good name in the modified jap import community and the drifting community.
www.tempetyres.com.au are another mob I see mentioned a lot. They sell some terrible wheels and linglong ditchfinder 2000 style tyres but they are supposed to be well priced and fast with the better quality stuff.

There is conjecture about whether the tyres are genuine Australian imports or grey imports. Some people say one thing, some say another.
At first I had a thought 'meh' to the idea of grey or parallel import tyres and I am okay with that if the importer knows their source of tyres however in this day and age I guess we just don't know where the tyres could be coming from. The Chinese are very very good at copying things even down to lettering and numbers so I guess there is always a chance that tyres of an unknown source that are to cheap to pass over might not be the real deal.
I have never heard of counterfeit tyres but I guess it is food for thought?

Never seen counterfeit tyres but I guess it's a possibility for sure.

I think by grey import they are bought direct from the factory rather than from say Goodyear Australia. I have never heard of counterfeit tyres but I guess it is food for thought?
The current tirerack prices for Goodyear Eagle F1 asyms, for instance, are cheaper than the wholesale price from Goodyear Australia.
