Anyone in Sydney into Hot Rod 911's?
Discussion
You've got me thinking now, need to check it out.
Basically, a hot rod 911 is really just a few cosmetic changes and some running gear mods so shouldn't be any different to all the modified jap kit you see everywhere. I'm planning on bringing a standard '88 carrera over and having a bit of fun but will do some research on the rego requirements.

I've always thought a 911 of that era would be a wise import. Especially as early 3.2's are now just over the 25-year mark, meaning they be legally registered if LHD - thus a lot cheaper.
Not come across the term 'hot-rod' 911 before but somehow it fits and I know exactly what you mean... and yes, I'm in Sydney, and yes I'm definitely into them!
Can't help with the specialists sorry, but I'd suggest the Porsche Club NSW would be a good place to start.

Hot rod 911's are fap worthy. I have heard of them being called 'outlaws' to.
They are often done in a similar style to hot rod Beetles. The Porsche 356 is a very popular car to do it to.. http://www.forum-newbeetle.fr/topic13268.html Though I am guessing that is a beetle with a 356 panel kit on it.
Here is the info I was thinking of that means a 911 can NOT be registered as a hot rod (DOTARS call them street roads): http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_reg...
Other sections here: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_reg...
I have always had a massive hankering to build a hot rod but I have always read that to do a 'nice' one is very expensive. Looking at what the WA DPI says they can only have club rego to which means you can't just drive the thing when you feel like it!

Yep the "outlaw" is the same I think, i've been hanging out on the DDK and Pelican Parts forums to get some inspiration. Some of those cars are incredible.
You definitely can spend fortunes but I'm planning on starting with something a bit less ambitious, new bumpers, suspension/engine overhaul and new interior rather than a full bare metal project. So the key is to buy a rust free donor which could prove the hardest part.
I still can't get over the fact if you want a track biased machine you can get an 80's 911 down to less than 900kg, that's lighter than a Lotus Exige and you get a torquey 250bhp
I've found a couple of places in Sydney that specialise in Porsche mechanicals and bodywork. Although I'm planning on doing most of the work myself it would be good to know there's some support available when needed. Anyone heard of Zag Automotive or Bob Whyms Automotive?

Anyway before I got distracted I have been looking at this one:

It is built on a Toyota Hilux chassis. This car would not be registered as a 'hot rod' with the club rego that comes with it. This car would be registered as a 're-body'...it's like getting a bodykit for your car and then getting it put over the pits. The engine swap to the V8 is easy enough to keep legal. Seems like an awesome way to get in to a hot rod that can be used daily and that would be useable!
A bit of a search found this company doing hot rod kit cars to build on to a chassis from another car: http://www.auskitcar.com/
.....But this is all way OT
