Hi Guys,

What do you make of this?

cossie on carsales

cossie on trading post

I would actually consider this, because:

It's a Cossie
It's very fast
It's very rare
It's unlikely to lose money
It would show our Aussie musclecar friends a thing or two
Description sounds good
Seems a good price

Things that would put me off:

In one add it's $500 less than the other
In one advert it's '460BHP' in the other it's ''500BHP plus'
There's no mention of what has more than doubled the power. Boost obviously, but what strengthening?
Folk having a genuine reason for sale but then 'may PX/swap something else'
I have no idea how this would stand legally in NSW. I would assume you'd have to get an Engineer's Certificate and doubtless there would be a million stupid ADRs that it wouldn't conform to. 'No blue engine' or something.
Who spends all that money and then sells it not even run in (unless it's gone bang and it would be nigh on impossible to sell here with no motor).

Does anyone know the car? I'm not really considering it and the main reason is the NSW legalities, but my lord, what a car that would be to have here...

I wonder how it entered the country...it's a 1988 car so maybe it came under the pre-89 rules which would allow it to be imported as a modified car and only needing to pass basic ADR's to be on the road.

I would assume moving it interstate could cause a few problems, it would have to go over the pits in your area so would have to conform to whatever rules for modified cars you have. I would say you need to at least enclose that pod filter and make sure it's not too loud.
I think you can swap an engine to another type from the same manufacturer so as long as the rego documents reflect the right engine number there would be no issue with that.

As for engine internals and things like the ECU programming there is not much you can do about seeing that when you look to buy. You just have to drive it and scrutinise any invoices and paperwork with it, even then there is no proof all those good bits are still inside the engine. With that sort of power output I would be tempted to get it on a dyno once I bought it to make sure it's tuned properly.

$20,000 does seem incredibly low but in the photo's the condition only looks 'okay'. The front bar looks patchy and is not fitted well and the paint is not gleaming. It is also a 4 door car, nothing wrong with that but I always understood that 3 doors were the really desireable models.

A friend of mine in the UK has got a 3 door that is now running around 400BHP at the flywheel. I'm told it can be a grumpy sod when it feels like it and the gearbox is complaining. Cost him a fortune to get to that point to, the engine was completely rebuilt.

Definately being pre-'89 would help massively with getting it legal, particularly in regards to emissions, which I think would otherwise be a hurdle. The thing is I've no idea where the other pitfalls would be in regards to the modifications. I think at some point some power:weight ratio comes into play and cars can be illegal purely because of this.

Of course 3-door Cossies are more desirable! But there's no denying the appeal of the Sapphire too.

All in all I can imagine the whole thing turning into a nightmare for one of several reasons. Which is a damn shame.

If I were in WA however, I reckon that would knock down enough concerns for me to take the plunge.

Power to weight ratio is a P plater thing 'aint it?

I know that in some states legal engine swaps are defined by a formula between vehicle weight and the new engine size...You can't put a large capacity V8 in an MX5.

I think you could get this car on the road in your state but you would have to jump through the hoops for it. Personally I would be more worried about the cost of replacing anything that happens to fall off.
