Guys and Gals, Will be decending on Sydney on the 1st of Aug to begin the 3 month Australia part of our round the world trip and as the title suggests looking for a little advice. As i mentioned above we have 3 months and fly out of Cairns on the 1st of Nov.

We plan to buy a car which will become a form of transport and possibly a home for some of the time too so we have been looking at station wagons around the $2k mark so if anyone knows of anything that might be for sale around that time or any sites besides Gumtree to find them we would be thankfull and any advice on the REGO/WOF would help too!

Next point was if anyone would be willing to let us pitch a tent on there land anywhere along the way or suggest us things to see and do on a budget?

And finally as I turn 30 a week after arriving in Sydney does anyone know if you can find cash in hand work for a few days/week at a time anywhere along the way?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully reply!

www.carsales.com.au is the main selling website. If you register and put in what you want, it will send you emails everyday especially for stuff under $5000. I would be aiming for less than $5000. That will still give you cars less than $2000. The Ford Falcon wagons are popular for travelling. Parts are cheap for them and most mechanics can fix them too. www.ebay.com.au is the other main one nowadays. You can also try www.tradingpost.com.au
Regards working, make sure you have the right visas as Mr immigration doesn't take to kindly to it when you don't.

Also what is the score with REGO/WOF on the cars?

Rego on cars is a third party insurance, that you have to have by law. Think of it as similar to raod tax in the uk. By that, you have to have it.

The rego pay's for personal injury only, it is NOT car insurance.

You do not need by law any other form of car insurance in Oz. But I would advise you to get at least third party, as driving standards over here are not the best.

Unlike road tax in the UK, you don't need anything else to get it, ie MOT type of stuff or insurance. So you can just buy it for the car if it hasn't got any when you buy it, but I would suggest getting a car with it for the length of your stay at least, because as you won't have an address, it will be harder for you to register the car.

Hope that helps.

With regards to the visa and working, like said before, be careful, they don't like jonny foreigners working without the correct visa's, and if caught, punishment will be harsh. Like leave the country now, and never come back.

^^^ Careful, things differ from state to state.

In NSW you need to have for rego:

Pink slip (like an MoT certificate)
Green slip (Compulsory 3rd party personal injury)
Rego (like road tax).

As mentioned above, best get one with enough rego to cover your trip and then some (for resale value) and the fact you won't have to go through all this crap at any point.

Also as above, make sure you get third party property insurance minimum.

We did a similar trip (although 20 + years ago) and found that 6 months wasn't nearly long enough !

I'm sure much has changed, so won't offer any specific advice - but I do remember that there is an issue selling a car that is registered in a different state. You might want to check if this is still a problem, as it could be a real pain to either register your NSW car in QLD without an address - or to have to travel back to NSW to sell it.

Final thought ... seek some advice from the locals before you head too far off the beaten track. It can be a very empty country if you venture inland !

Oh yes, and beware on gravel roads ... they can be very slippy for folk who aren't used to venturing off the tarmac !

Have a great trip - and post us some updates along the way !

Sorry for resurecting this thread out of the blue guys but as its now less than 2 weeks until i arrive in Sydney i have stepped up the search for the perfect travelling vehicle for the next 3 months and have stumbled across this
http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/detail...Qpb=true&Cr=1&__Ns=pCar_PriceSort_Decimal%7c1%7c%7cpCar_RankSort_Int32%7c1%7c%7cpCar_Make_String%7c0%7c%7cpCar_Model_String%7c0&keywords=&__N=1216%201247%201282%20441%20898%201506&silo=1011&PriceTo=441&seot=1&__Nne=15&__No=225&trecs=418&sid=12A002A0F6D6

My question is, It says in the ad that registration doesn't run out until oct 2010 but he mentions in the ad it is being sold unregistered. How does this work and how difficult is it to re-register a car in NSW?

Yes, you have to have rego from the state you register it in. As he says, it had QLD rego but no selling in NSW unregistered.

It's not difficult as long as the car is sound and unmodified. You need what's called a 'blue slip' - check out the RTA website for details. Like a pink slip (which is like an MOT) but costs a little more and goes into more detail and checks you don't have a sneaky turbo in there somewhere.

Stop press: 'Rear seat (this was professionally installed and the vehicle is legally
registered as a 5 seater, and the back seat can be folded forward if you
require more cargo space) '

That's the kind of st that could be contentious... I'm rushing out bye...

Thanks for the response. What kind of money are we talking to make this thing legal for me to drive from Sydney to Cairns?

Not much if that's all you're talking about. I was just dashing out of the office so sorry for cutting it short. I don't know, just pointing out that the blue slip is the same kind of thing as if you got a defect, ie they'll check the car is fully compliant. Things like extra seats could be a barrier. It actually looks very good though. For rego' consider prob $7-800 all in. That's blue slip, green slip, rego', plates etc. Add at least 3rd party property insurance to that unless you like serious risk.

No problem, Dont really have that much in the budget anyway so will keep looking for sub $2k motors. Found this one which looks more promising as it has rego until 2 weeks after we leave and it should be big enough to sleep in

http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/detail... This is a badge engineered Holden Commodore so all the mechanicals are relatively easy to get hold of.
There were loads of Magnas including the next one on from the one you have posted just above.

In order of least options in pre 98 vintage. Ford > Falcon - Falcon Futura- Fairmont. The last 2 have cruise control....not all of the Falcons have it. Maybe check for Air Conditioning too, fairly vital in OZ.
Mitsu- Magna then Verada
Holden Commodore > Commodore -Acclaim - Berlina then Calais(no Calais wagons that old) Acclaims are normally a safety loaded Commodore. Berlina is semi-luxury but they came with different stuff depending on what had been ordered.

Most dealer prices are normally very negotiable so maybe look at ones above $2000 say up to $2500
