Muppet driving on the emergency lane on the Graham Farmer... at 50k's+

Tailgating, in that weather?!!!! crazy, i couldnt see tail lights in front of me at one point, so was doing about 10k's an hour, (in parts)

mobile phone conversations... yaadaa yada yada... madness.

Tell me about it. I tried to leave the office in Perth at about 4.45 and had to turn around. I couldn't get onto the Freeway or Wanneroo Road - mostly because of the depth of the water.
I couldn't believe the speed people were driving through standing water in normal cars. I wouldn't have attacked it so aggressively in my Prado. As it was I was in the Skyline so I didn't want to risk it. I eventually left the office at 7pm and got home at 8pm (23km drive).
The Freeway north was still flooded and I must have passed at least 20 abandoned cars on the way.

GF's cars been peppered all over the roof with hail damage. Now have to:

a) hope the car insurance covers it; and
b) work out hell the repairers will fix it. I take it you cant just replace the roof section in terms of outer skin?

Its a Jazz fwiw.

Whats a Jazz worth now? Might be written off, wouldnt suprise me if the insurance companies write off a lot of cars just to get through the claims as fast as possible.

I didnt get hit by the storm to much, left work in Bibra Lake just as it began spitting with rain and the thunder was starting. Got in to Rockingham to heavy rain and thunfer / lightning but other than that we didnt get hit to hard at all...no wind, no hail and no powercuts.

I left the office in the CBD at 4.30, got home (usual 1 hour trip) at 6.45, after being sat on a train for what seemed like hours. I was horrified watching the cars drive on the Mitchell freeway. Tailgating and driving far too quickly for the conditions. They didn't seem to give a st that the road was flooded, and just drove staight through.yikes

I am really supprised there wasn't a major accident. Luckly I got to my car as the rain stopped so didn't even get wet hehe

That's what I've heard, that they are going to just write a load of cars off due to the roof damage. Easier and quicker to get through the backlog.

Does this mean there's gonna be some bargins to be had for a track day car???? scratchchin

Pickles auctions is the place to look for insurance write off cars.

A bloke at work had his car damaged by hail so he went to the body shop over the road for a quote and they have been writing dozens of cars off...yesterday they wrote off a 3 year old Impreza WRX!!

This bloke at work has got a 4 month old Honda Accord and its going to be marginal if they actually repair it. They don't like to pull dents out as the paint develops a microscopic crack in it which over a few years lets water in which gets trapped so if they were to pull the dents out they would also be painting the car BUT its a hard colour to match so the labour involved will be huge! The only other option is to replace the roof, bonnet and boot lid...again huge amounts of labour.

Has anyone else seen the pictures of the trashed Audi dealership in their emails?!

It would be prudent to closely inspect car purchases for a while to make sure your not getting something that was filled with water or had major repairs!

Her car is a 2004 Vti-S with 55k kms. Would estimate maybe 12500-13700 private.

Its black which am unsure if it makes it a pain to get the colour right.

The side has dimples up and down it, but the roof is properly peppered, and thats the biggy - how the hell do you repair a roof?! Its not like its a removal panel like say a wing.

It would normally be great to be written off but in this instance maybe not given the plans to go back to the UK in 6 months and that its a great little car.

Its due a service so perhaps leave that until after the insurance has had a look.

I told him to by it back as it is only a work van and drive it until it dies

I'm no expert but I would be suprised if they bothered to repair that.

To skin the roof they have to remove all the windows and gut the interior, then the car has to go in a jig to keep it square then they literally break the welds along the roof and peel it off as they go. It will need painting inside and out before having everything refitted. Then you have the worry of wondering if the roof is sealed properly and if the interior has gone back together as well as the factory did it.

The bloke at work with the Accord got his quote through yesterday and there is 3 days of labour in pulling the car down before they even look at the dents and painting. The quote is about 4 pages long and comes to over $5K and they are NOT replacing the roof!

Update time.

Rang insurer. They have rented a big warehouse and for 4 days everyone has to take their car there to be assessed.

If its a write off they take the car off you there and then and send the money within a day or so. They'll also give you salvage value so you can agree there and then to buy it back and just drive home, collect the difference.

Buying it back (jumping the gun here) would be a good option for us, question is, would another insurer insure a written off car and does it need to be re-registered?

for info, the current insurer wont reinsure it if its written off.

I think you might need to re-register it but double check that one.

Some insurers will insure a damaged car but beware they will set the insured value to reflect that its damaged. As I understand it once it is repaired they will still set the value at a level that reflects its history and value. This might be lower than it has cost you to buy back and repair.

Personally I wouldnt bother with the hassle of buying it back and fixing it. A proper, quality repair is not going to come cheap and a REVS check in the future will show its write off status so you might struggle to sell it.

Do you have any pictures of the damage?

No no pics. Its black as well so not sure if it will show up in photos that well.

We were actually thinking, if offered, of buying it, no reparing it and then just selling it when off to the UK. Depends on what the salvage value is.

Looking at a $14k payout there isnt much out there that she could buy thats as new and perhaps as good. She's also keen to keep it as she's had it since new and knows its past.

Maybe after all this it'll just get fixed!
