Buying Tyres - Best Value in Perth?
Discussion
In the next month or so I will need 4 x 245/40/18 93Y tyres.
I'm happy with the OEM Dunlop SP2030's but might go for another main brand (Michelin, Bridgestone, Yokohama, Continental, Pirelli etc). Main priorities are grip, low noise and economy.
I can get the tyres including shipping from the uk for about $1250. Tyres are about $900 of that so no duty.
I have only rung one or two dealers - maybe I didn't pick the best options as they came back with $450-550 each (and didn't have stock). No way.
Any ideas as to where I can get the best value main brand tyres in Perth?
Cheers,
Marcus.

Try Tire Rack in the US - shipping is cheap and the exchage rate is good at the moment. I picked up 4 F1 asymetrics for $300 less than the Australian wholesale price.
I have read of a lot of people now using Tire Rack especially when it comes to performance tyres. I know a few blokes in the Perth WRX club had tyres sent by them and shipping was only AU$300 and the tyres were here in a week. Fitting was about $15 per tyre. The tyres and shipping was all way below what you would pay for a high end road tyre here.If you don't feel like shopping online then Bob Jane and Ian Diffen have always got reasonable pricing or special offers on. Bentley Bridgestone is a good shop to see...run by well know racer Kerry Wade.

Thanks for the info - Tire Rack looks very good.
Can anyone recommend a good fitter NOR who won't mind fitting self-supplied tyres?
Thanks again.
Marcus.
I just took mine to the local Bob Jane T-Marts and they put them on without question. Can anyone recommend a good fitter NOR who won't mind fitting self-supplied tyres?
Thanks again.
Marcus.
I'd use Tire Rack again. Less than a week to get here - and Goodyear told me I would have a 3 week wait to get them here.

Rang Beaurepairs in Balcatta - costs for 245/40/18 93Y Dunlop SP2030 (standard tyre, about $220 in UK) - $650 each!!
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Dunlop&tireModel=SP+Sport+2030&partnum=44YR8SP2030V2&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yesAbout AU$340-ish each!
I have always found when buying tyres locally that you really need to trawl around the places you are willing to go and get them competing on price. I bet you could even get a better price calling another Beaurepairs.
$650 per tyre is an absolute rip off.
The Lexus garage quoted $684 ea for the Dunlops, which are cheapo-ish tyres in the UK. They quoted $489 for Yokohama's the have in stock.
I can get Continental ExteremeContact DW's for circa $200 ea plus shipping, about $300 ea all-in including fitting.
I mentioned the diference in price to the Lexus service guy, who told me that if I bought tyres that didn't come in through "official" channels then my insurance would be invalid.
I think that is b*lls*it and would never stand up in court. There is nothing in my Lexus insurance either. Frankly I am astounded they can say such a thing.

If your tyres are DOT approved for highway use (I.E. Dont say NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE on them) and are of the right size, load and speed rating then there is nothing to stop you using them. I am amazed the Lexus shop could say that! How many people that dont know any better have been lead in to spending $2736(!!) on the back of a lie!
I received the quote by email from Tire Rack including Fedex 3-5 day shipping. They will only take payment via bank transfer which is fine (due to Australian credit card rules).
Shipping was $220, tyres less than $200 ea - so total of less than AU $1000 for four Continentals plus what it costs to fit. Less than $1000 for the goods so no duty payable.
We are getting badly sh*fted when buying tyres in Australia. I can't imagine that I ever would, as saving nearly $800 over four tyres is a huge saving.
Cheers,
Marcus.

Only way to go. And it's not really the retailers fault - wholesale price for 4 Goodyear F1 asyms is $1300 in 225/47/17. Shipping was $220, tyres less than $200 ea - so total of less than AU $1000 for four Continentals plus what it costs to fit. Less than $1000 for the goods so no duty payable.

I got them delivered for $800AU. That's $500 below wholesale alone.
I recieved them in 4 days in excellent condition. Which was also quicker than I could get them from Goodyear Australia.

I just got 2 more Pirelli P Zero Dragons for the Monaro, put 2 on the front a few months ago and they seem fine. (235/45/18)
In fact they were far grippier than the (admittadly old and hard) PZero Rossos on the back so I've worn them (that is the Rosso rears) out in double quick time LOTS of smoke
The dragons are less than half the price of the Rossos, $260 each from Stuart Kostera (another racing driver, FF and Porsche Cup etc) in Kalamunda (ie a 200metre walk from home)

Tyres received seven days after ordering, no problems. No import duty. Well packed, including a letter from Tirerack to customs explaining that the tyres were stored in safe, dry conditions and did not have vegetable matter in them / hadn't been infested by cane toads etc.
Tyres fitted this morning by Bob Jane T-mart on Scarborough Beach Road for $132, bit pricey but there you are.
Total cost $1133. Cheapest premium tyre that Bob Jane T-mart could have supplied would be a Yokohama V550 for circa $430 each, so I saved plenty.
Very happy. I recommend Tirerack.
