Will want a phone when I move to OZ in August. Can I just get a SIM that will work straight away In my Iphone or would it be best to sell phone and buy new contract when I get out. What are the contracts for the Iphone, what's the package and cost?

Cheers

Hi, don’t know what model you have, 2g 3g 3gs etc but I have a 3g and recently moved to Bahrain, my phone was with O2 and I used a free program called Blackra1n (yes that is a 1 not a typo) to jail break it and unlock it, I didn’t even need a sim in it or anything to do it all you need is a wifi connection, I sat in a coffee shop here with free wifi and it did it in not time at all. Google it and have a read up on it. If your iphone is on a uk contract its locked to the network provider so when you get to OZ popping a aussie sim in wont work. the only downside is that once you unlock and jailbreak the phone you can no longer download any updates from apple as this will lock your phone out and I think changes the firm wire so the program you used like blackra1n will no longer work, apples way of stopping people unlocking phones I guess. Oh and the only other thing is my YouTube no longer works on my phone but i never used it anyway! Like I said I have a 3g so if you have the latest one I don’t know if the same applies, there are some very good apple geek sites that will help, most beginning with I something! Can’t think of one right now!
Your other option as you said is buying one in OZ, if I’m not mistaken mobiles in Oz are not tied to contacts so you can buy any phone and use and provider, I only know this as many people bought the new iphone from OZ because of this reason but it may have changed.
Hope this is of some help, sorry if I’ve confused things! My phone is working fine, 3G internet, apps (my iTunes account is a uk one so no restrictions on the apps although i haven’t paid for one since being here but had no problems downloading free ones.)

Oh, and before you do anything to your iphone BACK IT UP!!! and make note of the date, I backed mine up a couple of times, one of them was at a later date after I had unlocked it, I restored the more recent back up and it locked my phone again! banghead

I can't comment on the other carriers but iPhones from Optus are tied to the carrier.

Two of my kids have them and both aren't impressed with them as a phone.

I have a 3G but I would probably want the new one that's out in June. I think I'll sell it and buy one when I get out. What are the tarrifs like and what do they include?

You can walk into the apple store and buy them outright with no contract over here, no need to tie it to any particular carrier and it comes completely unlocked.

If you buy one through Telstra/Optus/etc it will be locked to that network and you end up paying the same price for the handset (or more in some cases) over the life of the contract anyway so i've never seen the point of being locked in for 2 years.
