Hi,
I am currently 2 months through a year long working visa in Australia.
Several days ago I was stopped by police in South Australia for doing 135 in a 110kph area and given a $330 fine. They checked my UK licence and I gave them an address in NSW where I had been staying with friends.
Some people I have spoken to say there is no point in paying the fine as long as I don't go back to SA, and they will not be able to suspend my UK licence. Is this true?
Also, I was wondering if not paying the fine would have any implications on re-entering Australia in the future?

Cheers,
Joe

AFAIK, they cant suspend your UK lisence.

You should just pay the fine, why not pay it ?? You would back in UK.

Yes, it will have implications on returning to Oz. On your visa application is a requirement that you do not owe any debt to the Australian Government.

Yes I would pay it in the UK, but the fine would be so much more affordable there!

As said above, it will not do you favours when you come to get your next work visa if you will be (but do you know, for sure, that you will NEVER need to work there again?)

I don't know if they can but could they say take that year long Visa off him once they realise he is not paying??

Pay the fine.

Don't you watch Border Patrol? (ok, I don't, but I've seen the ads).

Never mind getting back in, if I were you I'd worry about getting out. If they're clever enough to flag you on the way back in, they're clever enough to stop you on the way out too.

If I was you I'd just pay the fine, it's best to have a clear record, if you ever decide to stay in Australia permanently and then get rejected for a $300 outstanding fine then you'll regret it... they check everything when you go for permanent residency so keeping your track record clean will be the best thing you can do.

Well I guess I'll be paying it then. Not so bad as I can pay it in instalments I believe. Cheers for the helpful replies.

Yep, pay it definately.

I had to go through all manner of grief clearing off unpaid parking fines etc when coming back to Australia.

When i sold my car before i left back in 2001 the transfer out of my name hadn't gone through correctly so there was a world of carnage run up by the new owner but listed against me.

In my case it was just a paperwork mountain to clear off since i could show that I had left the country from passport stamps so couldn't have been driving/parking illegally at the time, but if you had genuinely evaded a fine it would still be listed and not look too great when going through the police check stage of the visa application process...

Best not burn bridges you might decide you want to use in future for the sake of a couple of hundred bucks.

I'm on a similar visa dn got one last week, they actually sent it to my UK address but I just paid it as the last thing I want is to not be able to get back in following a trip back to the UK.

I was on vacation in New South Wales during January and just this week (22 March) received a 647$ speeding ticket at my home in the US. The fine is for 91km/h in a 50km/h zone. I've been doing research regarding camera accuracy because I couldn't imagine myself being that much of an idiot with my driving. I haven't found anything too helpful thus far.
Of course, I am considering not paying it but then returning to Australia might become impossible. Any suggestions on fighting it? The State Debt Recovery Office states that they will not consider leniency on cases such as this!

Definately Pay Up. I was aregular visitor to family befor moving here two years ago (Sydney). I picked up a couple of fines that were posted back to UK as I used my UK license. It came with avery clear note stating that failure to pay would affect re-entry into Oz. If you wanna return, keep your nose clean.
