Been going to the beach for the last few nights with gf for a splash around but must be getting old/paranoid as crapping myself about sharks. God knows why as never bothered me before.

Anyone else here afraid of the local wildlife in an irrational way?!

You're just getting older and becoming more aware of your own mortality. Just like you drive more safely nowadays than you did as a teen and wonder if the bloke who's hand you've just shook washed his hands after his last dump.

Where is this by the way? Maybe you're right to be scared... not that scared will help of course.

haha i think you're bloody right, especially on the germs thing!!

I was swimming at Floreat Beach which isnt a million miles from Sorrento....

My GF saw a shark swim past her about 10 years ago and so this was her first trip in the water since then, so neither of us are feeling particularly bullish about it!

WA Today on 13/10/09 said:
A great white shark was seen mauling a carcass 100m from a Perth beach today.
Perth Now on 01/01/10 said:
AT least two more sharks have been spotted off Perth beaches, following nearly a week of constant sightings of large sharks close to shore.
The first sighting was around 9.30am about 200m off the Brighton dog beach. The shark was about 2m long and was heading south.

A couple of hours later a 3m shark was spotted 500m off Floreat beach.
Perth Now on 01/01/10 said:
The sightings follow yesterday's drama when several large sharks were spotted off Perth beaches, including Floreat.

The aerial shark patrol is not operating today as it does not have sufficient funding to operate midweek. It will be back in the air tomorrow morning.
Perth Now on 01/01/10 said:
About four hours later there was a confirmed sighting of a 4-5m white pointer, 500m south of Floreat Beach.
myZOO on 06/01/10 said:
All beaches from Scarborough to Floreat have been closed after three sharks were spotted close to shore.
Australian Lifeguard Service said:
They called in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, which confirmed the sighting of two hammerhead sharks and one tiger shark.
Later, two hammerhead sharks were spotted between Swanbourne and City Beaches, then a 4m tiger shark off Brighton Beach around 100m from shore.
Geraldton town beach was also closed today following the sighting of a 3m tiger shark.
The shark-spotting helicopter has been in operation for two seasons, and Surf Life Saving WA operations manager Chris Peck said this new eye in the sky could mean they were simply spotting sharks that had always been there.
..."The last couple of days have seen bigger and more aggressive sharks.".
I don't know where your unfounded paranoia has come from, get back in there and have a splash around.

I'm not particularly scared of the local wildlife but I do respect that some of it is fecking dangerous...I think twice before shoving my hand in / under things in the shed or garden and when we have been wandering around in the bush I have never gone stomping through grass or anything like that.

I have been snorkelling at Coral Bay and watched loads of reef sharks swimming around below me in crystal clear water along with hundreds of other fish and to be honest I did not feel unsafe at all but those sharks are very docile and not particularly big. Even if one did go for you it wouldnt be able to swim off with you or remove a limb...you would be a mess but you would stand a good chance of fighting it off and getting out of the water.

I do think about sharks when I'm swimming here in Perth but then someone was killed by a Great White on christmas day 08 right at my regular spot, he was only 15-20 meters off the beach to.

The only other time I have really thought about big sharks is when we were in Coral Bay, we were out in the open ocean beyond the reef looking for Manta Rays to swim with.
We tracked one down (a 4 meter wide female!!!) and the boat dropped 3 of us in the water with one of the people running the boat. The boat then goes ahead to drop the next group before turning back for us.
Its 5 minutes of hard swimming to keep up with the ray before we all give up, then the guide from the boat tells us to huddle together and she swims off to the next group and signals the boat to return which takes a couple of minutes...its during this time that you come down from the adrenaline rush and you have a look underwater and see nothing but inky blue / black below you and you remember the guide on the boat saying we are in 200 meter deep water. You all unconciously huddle closer and draw your legs up!!!

I think the biggest fear with sharks is that in the water you are in a completely hostile environment that you dont operate to well in and a shark is able to appear at any time without any noise or warning. You will get a warning from a snake and you know there is likely to be a spider under a plant pot in the shed so its not as scarey but not with sharks...heck a 6 meter great white could pass within 3 feet of you and you would never even know it unless it bit you!

fook me, talk about scary.

Floreats a strange beach as its shallow for about a metre then just drops so that you go straight from ankle deep to nips deep very quickly. Thats what scares me.

Also its quite quiet so there isnt a barrier of 20 guys with southern cross tattoo's as starters in front of me.

This is interesting, the fact that the beach has a large shelf. I was on a flight back from Brisbane one day and got chatting to a guy next to me who was a pilot in the shark patrol 'planes. He was telling me about a beach down south Sydney somewhere that has one of these shelves and was rife with sharks (they are everywhere btw, the shark patrols are only interested in those taking an interest in people) - there was a dog on the beach sometimes putting some feeet in the water - the shark was literally stalking it along - each time it went in the water the shark would come up from the shelf - this went on for ages.

Quoting all that earlier was more for comedy value, or a dig at the media being to blame for your paranoia rather than it being something genuinely worth being concerned over. But that said...

Yes the shelf is really quite off putting. There are parts where it goes deep and then shallow and then deep again. Whatever it is its quite unsettling.

Also a few hundred metres up City Beach is rammed but Floreat isnt. Perhaps the locals know something I dont.

People say, oh dont worry, it will be fine but you know, theres always that one occassion....

My ex-stepmum worked with the wife of the guy who got his legs eaten and died at Cottesloe a few years ago. Story was he was in an early morning swim club (6am) and went to the beach, got there and wasnt sure so said he wasnt going in, so said no but his friend coerced him and he went in. After 10 mins changed his mind and was heading out of the water when the shark got him at knee height and took his legs off. Loss of blood and consequently shock got him within a minute or 2 but really not a pleasant way to go.

See, again with selling the benefits of Melbourne.. smile

Nice enclosed bay, miles of golden sand, no rip tides to drag you out and no big swimmy bitey things to detach bits of your body that should really stay attached....

Works for me, and if you really must have surf and bitey things you can always go to the open ocean 45mins East or West.

My apartment is right on the edge of Sydney harbour. Everyone has been telling me there's large sharks in the bay we overlook but no one has ever actually seen one or heard of a confirmed sighting. i know there's been attacks int he harbour but they are rare and given how many people use it recreationally I'm inlcined to take my chances - however, last night I did keep an eye on a stand up paddler who was about 100 yards from shore as the sun was setting, just incase......biggrin

Cheers, absolutely loving it at the mo.

Where's the classic car show taking place on Aus day?

Be good to meet a few other PH'ers.

Er, pretty sure a Navy diver was nipped a back in Feb 09 at Garden Island in Sydney Harbour. I've seen one whilst snorkelling off Manly - about 4-ft long and around 7m below me which was plenty enough to promote bubble-blowing at both ends. Apparently it was likely to have been a baby Bronze Whaler Noice.

Chatting to regular divers/snorkellers there are plenty of juvenile sharks in and around the Northern Beaches, and Manly Beach gets cleared a few times each summer by shark alarms.

No need for any panic, just make sure there's other food available biggrin

consider Hyde park to be your base, college st (and I think macquarie st) that border the park is where the cars are. Google nrma motorfest. I'll dash you a pm on Monday when I'm at my pc. Maybe this should be a new thread actually, I reckon we can get a few folk in. Few scoops, some good folk, good cars, live entertainment and a jet flyover - can think of worse ways to spend a Tuesday!

Looks like only a little one.
I lived near there and remember that event well. That was the spot I would take the children swimming. Its a popular spot for people to do early morning swims, for a week or so after that the water was rather deserted. Oh, its not a thong, we wear thongs on our feet downunder, but nice all the same, well spotted.
