As the title says, we have been lucky enough to get our Skilled Independant Visa's, so was just toying with the thought of what to bring over.

From reading the threads I understand you need to own here in the UK for at least 12 months, so need to get cracking.

Is there a limit to the number of cars you can bring in per person?
Both current cars in my name, but could put a new one in the wife's name if needed?

We currently have a Range Rover V8 4.4 Vogue 2003 & a Ford F150 Supercharged 100th anniversary edition.

Both are LPG'd which I believe is quite popular down under.

I was toying with the thought of getting a nearly new TDV8 Diesel Range Rover to sell on settling in Aus & hopefully make a dollar, if there is a premium on these?

Would it be best to bring Diesel or stick with Petrol?

What are 993 Porsche 911 C2's fetching out in Aus?
Always wanted to have one for a while so this maybe the excuse I need.
Are these air cooled ones seen as a desirable model out there or the later water cooled?

I know lots of questions, but hell I'm excited.

shouldn't have sold my Griffith......

Hope someone can assist with the above or recommend some good new / used car price guides for Aus.

www.carpoint.com.au still exists and was another one but they and carsales are the same now.
As for importing can't help you there.

1 car per person and has to have been registered in the name of the applicant for 12mths+.

The Range Rover would prob fetch about $40k ish at most being an import I would have thought, so I'd say the F150 would be the better bet. LPG is definately a big benefit but I can still see the Range Rover being a pain to sell even with it.

For the second car personally I'd be thinking buy and bring an early Bentley Arnage in your wife's name if you are able to wait the 12mths+. ~£30k in the UK, and around $150K here.

Will have a read through!

Unfortunately the Harley is a Left Hand Drive - so it seems no good for the Oz market.

Plenty of left hookers here in the UK being driven. ( converted Yank motors here are questioned because of the aftermarket conversion & questionable quality of them )

Thanks all the same as I wont waste my time bringing a left hander if they wont shift down there.

Dont forget you need to have owned and used the car for 12 months in many cases otherwise you will be stung.

If you have always wanted a porsche, then buy one in the UK and bring it, prices are very high down here.

Are Diesel's or Petrol favoured down there for 4 x 4's?

High end stuff - petrol.

Patrols and some Landcruisers diesel is increasingly common but most aussies still remember crappy old diesels and have no concept of efficient and quiet euro diesels.

You're not wrong, try a decent spec Cayman S for nearly $200K, that's over £100k!!!!

Classic cars are more reasonable over here although nothing's a bargain apart from the Holden's.

MCFADDEN, I'd speak with an import agency and the department of transport regarding the left hand drive cars, there are a few over here (Mustangs etc) that are left hookers and seem to sell, also do some homework on specialist places to sell the car and possible auctions (Bonhams & Goodmans).

I'm with everyone else, ditch the Rangie and get something more unique, whilst the Range Rover is still a premium price over here you wont get many people calling you for it.

Just make sure you are sensible with the prices when you sell it - there's a 1994 Mini over here and they want $31,000 for it, a few expensive TVR's too. The Aussie's do like their imports (Skylines etc) but some of the insurance companies wont touch you... I had this issue with the Elise when I first insured it overhere. People are wise to the UK imports though (ie, they check the UK sites for the price, then add shipping to work out how much its really worth!) so it has to be something special and desirable in my opinion.... and you never know, when you get here you may decide to keep it!

Good luck, I brought my Elise over and havent regretted it, hard work but well worth it.

Whats the sort of distain for UK cars imported into Australia though? I am seriously thinking of going to the motherland very soon and would take the oppertunity to buy something interesting to bring back WITH THE SOLE PURPOSE of making money (something i have NEVER done with a car in my life!!!). My wage is so low in Oz now that the profit on the Bently is more than i earn in Adelaide in a year!

I have looked into 355's, 360's, Maserati and the Red Lable Arnarge you mentioned above and it seems totally possible to have a toy for a year (maybe even sharing the costs by doing a 50/50 share), and shipping it over and still making a decent amount. Enough to fund a second smile

Is it possible not to even boter coming back to Aus and just ship one car a year there and have a dealier/buyer take it from the dock?

I think it was UKDennis on here I exchanged a few emails with a while back about personal imports. He has been doing them for a few years and seems to turn a profit on them.

I think the bit to be careful over is how quickly you expect to sell the car, I remember UKDennis mentioned in a thread he has had cars take over 12 months to sell. There is a very small market for niche cars in Australia.

I'm not sure that there is much disdain for UK cars, just people being very careful with their money. If you were already in the market for spending $200K you might be more comfortable buying an Aus delivered car with traceable Aus history that will help you sell it on later. I guess it depends on the car, its history, how rare it is and if there is an enthusiast for that car in Aus.

As for not even leaving the UK...I thought you have to prove your intent to leave the UK at the time of import approval being granted? I dont know what happens if you dont follow through on your intent.
I'm sure you would be allowed to have an agent collect the car for you. You dont need to collect the car in person when you do other types of import.

I think you do need to be in Australia, the import approval documents arent provided unless you are in the country, Im sure I remember reading that when I did all my paperwork.
