Reminds when of when I got my old Pajero back from the garage after having the idle speed controller replaced. The garage had put the throttle cable on wrong and it jammed open when I was accelerating in 4th gear. I was pretty frightened for a moment but common sense took over and I turned the ignition off (leaving the keys in so I could still steer) and I jumped on the brakes and came to a safe stop. I didn't want to knock it into neutral as the engine would probably have blown!!

How far did this guy have to travel before he figured out how to stop? - really surprised nobody was hurt.
I bet he needed a change of underwear when he did eventually come to a stop.

I love the Ford response to this "Oh yeah there was a cruise control recall in the US...something about fires...but THIS cruise control problem is not related, no..no I'm sure its not"

I had the throttle jam wide open in an MR2 I used to have, didnt know it was jammed until I went to change gear right at the top of the rev range hehe

I just let it run in to the rev limiter and tried to hook the pedal back up with my foot but couldnt do it so killed the ignition and knocked it in to neutral and coasted to a stop. The pedal arm had become hooked on a bit of trim that had come adrift under the dash so it would not return.

My 2nd MR2 was a heavily modified bh of a thing to drive and I had an interesting moment in that when an intercooler hose blew off. This hose was after the throttle so with the hose open to the air it was in effect sucking in unmetered air and was 'full throttle'

I was in 3rd gear that time half way round a roundabout so I effectively had full throttle while steering in a light mid-engined car with a locked diff...trying to get it pointing at an exit while controlling oversteer with no throttle control was interesting!!

Anyway back to the original story, I wouldnt really expect anything of the average driver but if it was a manual why didnt he just grab neutral? If it was an auto he still could have forced it in to N or P...it would have taken a decent bit of effort and would have made a 'bit of noise' but he could have done it.

"She told me to jump on the brake and pull the handbrake at the same time, which I did,'' a still shaken Mr Weir said.

scratchchin Thank the lord she was there. Afterall, jumping on the brakes and pulling on the handbrake at the same time will engage a whole new level of braking banghead. I mean he's very lucky he didn't have the back seats down too, as that would have given him another 50kph in speed, and even the handbrake would have struggled to cope with that.!!!
