Driving to Uluru/Ayers Rock
Discussion
Hi all, well to cut a long story short, i didnt buy a car in the end, but found a mte who has one. So, theplan is to take a little road trip up to Ayers rock and the surrounding areas, starting from Mlbourne on the Fourth. Have 8/9 Days for the whole trip, which should be enough.
Basically i was just wondering if anyone could share any tips/advice with us in regards to the drive?

Avoid hitch hikers and men with beards driving utes.
On a serious note....I did that drive some years ago and loved it. Amazing scenery. One of the best drives of my life. If you are going via the Great Ocean Road and SA, Coober Pedy is worth a visit and being one of the strangest and inhospitable towns on the planet. I gather Mad Max was filmed there but its much weirder than that. Cary lots of water as its mighty hot if you break down

Unless you are going off the beaten track then any road car will get you there and back without an issue. Plenty of passing traffic as well. The main thing is to make sure you take water. Lots and lots of water. It will also be pretty warm by then so don’t do too much during the middle of the day. 8/9 days for there and back from Melbourne will be pushing it. About 2,600kms and you do not want to be driving at dawn or dusk (seriously, the danger from roos is that bad). That said cruising at 120 you should knock it over in 2 days.
Oh, and Coober Pedy was not where they filmed Mad Max – that was Silverton, about 30kms out of Broken Hill on the edge of the Mundi Mundi Plain.
Watch Wolf Creek - tells you all you need to know
Did someone say take lots of water? if you didnt know, take lots of water!
Break down - put bonnet up and stay with car. Next car WILL stop.
Take spare fuel in cans.
Take food. lots of food.
And do not, repeat, do not drive at night. Those Roos are big bds and can basically write your car off and kill you if hit too hard.
Same for wombats actually....

If you do need to drive at dawn or dusk, the best advice is get behind a road train, and stay behind it. They don't hang about on the open roads, they don't stop for anything and the roo just bounce off them.
Oh, and don't forget water....
I really want to see soem Road train's! your B-Doubles are awesome, but the road trains look out of this world! Oh, and don't forget water....

Pffft water....just fill an esky with ice and a few cartons of piss. Youll be right.
Driver shifts are determined by drinking beer until you cant drive straight but dont worry about stopping, the roads are wide and straight enough that you can do a driver change on the run.
Always always always try and handle the local wildlife, the snakes love to be picked up because your so warm.
Again always drive at dusk and dawn, its cooler then so your car will go faster and the beer will be colder.

Once you get "outback" Don't drive past a fuel stop without topping up. If you only have a single tank then carry extra in cans, There was one section up north where we didn't stop as we had just over 1/2 a tank plus the sub tank, by the time we reached the next fuel, the AC was off and it was in neutral for all downhill stretches and we were going for a hypermiling record.
