Hi,

ETA 5 weeks and counting smile

In the Uk I've been racing my Westfield for the last 8 years and would love to get into some form of amatuer circuit racing in Oz, does anyone know what types of race series are available?

More importantly I'll need a car. My employer is sorting a pool car for the first few months but I'll need something smart, a couple of years old with low/average mileage that seats at least four adults.

In addition it will need to be able to carry stuff like mountain bikes and surf boards and it absolutely must be quick and preferably have a big V8 engine cloud9

On my shortlist so far are the following and in no order of preferance:

1. Holden SS V Sportswagon

biggrin What dya reckon? what else should I be looking at?

There's a reasonable variety but really depends where you plan to live.

Wakefield Park and Eastern Creek have plenty of stuff but if you're in Perth you're looking at a 5 day drive each way.

A v8 ute is a tank compared to the clubby and will bring you shame and dishonour to your family. Id perhaps look at havinv a couple cars. Plenty of space. One you can thrash and the other one a workhorse. I drive an ek ute every day and its not exactly an ideal race car but I have run worse smile

Welcome to oz by the way. Always good to have another pom in oz. Not as if I dont already work with 50 billion of them. wink

Its a crying shame your Westfield is not coming out with you! Have a look at www.cams.com.au and start looking at the CAMS affiliated clubs, you will need to join one anyway to get a CAMS license.

If you want cheap and plentiful then a SS Wagon would be hard to go past. Unless you want to spend uber cash thats about your only choice for a performance wagon.

If you need a tow car your choices are again limited to 6 & 8 cylinder local cars or heading down the urban off roader route if you dont want to spend silly money.

Note that some of the local performance cars have enough torque to pull a house down but have silly piddling little load limits and towing capacity. This is to do with the sports suspension fitted to them and the high performance tyres not having a high enough load rating.
The manufacturers also had a bit of a problem giving the cars a 2500-3000KG tow capacity and them all coming back after a few weeks with a snapped driveline from careless drivers...A Falcon turbo is rated to 1600KG where the taxi spec model with a tow pack fitted is rated for 2500KG!

I belive the laws surrounding towing are a bit different to the UK, you can only tow what the manufacturer states, there are no multiplications of vehicle weight to work out towing capacity.

The new Utes handle a lot better than the sedans! or a lot better than the old sedans!
When I swap from one to the other I have to be careful as the ute corners so much better than the sedan.
I too recommend getting one car for racing and one for every day use.

Considering the size of the population in WA I am always suprised by the amount of motorsport avaiable and also the sheer variety of cars you see. There are some flipping rare and valuable cars getting about in WA!

I have no doubt we could support the Wanneroo extensions and another new track on top of that, I also think we have space for a new series or two!

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I don't intend to race my road car, I'm looking for a race series and will buy a suitable race ar, a clubman series would be ideal but will consider anything - I raced an MGF at a track near Goulburn during my stay in 2004, they had a one make series.

I am also looking for a road car I can use for work purposes. It's a client facing role and my company (Canon) have told me it has to seat 4 adults so Ute's are out sadly! I don't really want a european car as I've driven them all my life and really fancy something with a bl*omin great V8, just cant see past the Holdens at the moment as I don't really like the Ford Falcon.

I like the idea of having a ute as a 2nd car but as I'll also be getting a motorbike I don't want the hassle of running more than one.

Yeah I know it's a shame but I'm actually looking forward to racing something different. I figure I can always bring it over at a later date if I need to.

Thanks for the web link, that's v. useful as is the tow capacity info. Hopefully I can find a lightweight series so capacity isn't a big issue.

Great link, thanks. Any thoughts on which is the best clubbie make? I've seen one version with an ali monocoque chassis that looks interesting - PRB or something I think?

If you are looking for a race car go for some thing like a westfield or the arrow ( which use to be called westfield australia before the guys in the uk found out )as they are the cheapest ones to build or buy,

If you are wanting to drive one the road and race, I think you cannot go past a birkin it is a south african kit and I think it has the highest build quality of them all followed buy a PRB

I wasn't too clear either...I was more emphasizing that the new VE Commodores handle a lot better than the older VT-VZ ones.
If you want a manual commodore wagon...it would have to be an SS or SSV or maybe a HSV tourer???! The manuals can only tow 1600kg. Autos can tow 2100kg, if that is important to you.
If it is an Auto, I would go with the V8 Calais V version.
Just so I don't get accused of bias! A vehicle not available in the UK either is the Ford Turbo Territory. Would fit in the same category, well sort of but they do like to go drinking! and Auto only but it is the very good ZF 6 speed. Never driven one but have driven the older shape Turbo Falcon sedan (Typhoon) and that was very good.

I have a couple of kids who live in Perth and am very much aware of what is happening over there.

I think I could have expressed it a bit better but I was rather flippantly indicating the size of the country as most coming from OS have no idea just how bloody big and desolate it is.

If you are going from PI to Jindy I'll see you there.

As a personal import you have to demonstrate using the car for the last year before import. i would bring the westy over now even if you have to have/buy a bigger container as you will not be able to bring it over as a personal import later. See here for details. The Chim will be old enugh next year to bring in but will have to sort ownership as I brought the Tuscan over when I arrived (technically only one car per person).
