Hi,
As I'm emigrating in the next few months I've got the opportunity to import 2 cars into Australia, one being under my wifes name and was thinking it might be an opportunity to sell one on for a small profit!

Is there any reason I can't sell the car straight away when I get out there?

Also, what would be some good make/models to look at bringing over.

If it's all fine to do this does anyone want to put an advanced order in? biggrin

You need to have owned the car here in the UK for at least 12 months before you import it to Aus - so I think there might be a small flaw in your plan! (unless it's older than 1989)

Myself and mates have looked in to doing this a few times (I'm from Aus, and living in the UK). It really doesn't seem financially worth it. By the time you take in to account depreciation over 12 months before you can send it to Aus, the shipping costs and taxes on arrival, and then the fact that you need to sell a non australian delivered car (so worth less than a local car) you're unlikely to make a profit. Better off putting the cash in to some other type of investment for 12 months.
If you were taking something which you intend to use yourself for a few years then it makes sense, but otherwise I don't think so.
Only exception to this might be something really unique and 'unobtainable' in australia - like a Noble or a TVR or something. A personal import would be a cheap way of getting something like that in to Aus and road registered - and you might make some money!

If you DO come up with a car that is going to make a profit in Aus I'd be keen to know! smile

Thanks for the reply, 12 months of prior ownership would stop that!

My 6 series convertible!

To sell here I'd get £19K, in Sydney it's worth AU$80K min (due to being an import, all others are Au$100K plus).

Tax and shipping is £5K all up.

Exchange rate is 1.6 so I'm landing it taxed and driveable for under AU$40K.

Soooo, I'm certainly bringing the 6 to Aus. I'll also post how I get on with importation.

Big question is.....should I take my Ultima GTR or Discovery 3 (under wife's allowance).

The GTR will struggle to pass all the reg's however would look very very cool outside Harry's Cafe De Wheels on a Saturday night!
The Discovery 3 will also make profit ala 6 series but a much lower level.

Robin.

Robin,

Is your wife already the registered keeper of the Ultima or the Disco? If she's not, I do wonder how the Dept of Infrastructure would view the requirement for minimum 12 month "ownership" of the vehicle you want to import. You should probably ask them before planning further.

Good luck.

Yep, I have by email. They are fine with the Disco as insurance and various receipts have been in wifey wife's name for the last three years (although ownership is in mine).
GTR is a different issue. Their actual advice was "sell your toy mate"

Where are you heading Robin?

Reason I ask is that in WA, if the UK V5 shows your wife as the registered keeper (i.e. in effect, the owner) there is no stamp duty paid on first registration.

However, this does not seem to be the case in other states such as NSW. For a car of reasonable value, this can amount to thousands of $.

I reckon you could sell the Discovery in a reasonable time frame, some people might be put off by the import part but anyone a bit savvy would see the value. You might end up keeping it yourself once you see the cost of replacing it!!

The Ultima is really a niche car here and I think you would need to decide if you are bringing it as a long term ownership prospect or as something to sell.

If you want to have it as a keeper then go for it, it would be just so so unique here and would attract some real attention. Some hard work now to get it on the road would be paid off with a few years of fun.

If you are looking to sell you would have to be prepared to still keep it around for a long time, there is one for sale in Aus now that has been hanging around forever. The cost of getting it on the road might not make it worth it.

Heading to Sydney around April 2010. Sadly it's within a year otherwise I would have brought something silly right now e.g. a 911 GT3 or the like.

I'm going to hang onto both cars when I get there anyhow so not really like the OP first asked. If I sell the Disco I'd have to pay a fortune to get it replaced.

Now exploring the possibility of bringing the GTR in as parts and then re-assembling and getting it roadworthy while there....

Road Vehicle Kits including Disassembled or Partly Disassembled Road Vehicles - Import Declaration and VIA is Required
Importations of road vehicle kits including disassembled or partly disassembled road vehicles are subject to an assessment made by Infrastructure.

If you wish to import a road vehicle kit, you must submit a full application to Infrastructure with all the relevant information. Infrastructure will assess the application and determine if a VIA is required. If a VIA is not required for your road vehicle kit, Infrastructure will advise you in writing.

It is important to note that State and Territory registration authorities may not register a reassembled road vehicle or a road vehicle kit for use on public roads without a valid VIA
From: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4371#kit...

So it can be done if they let you

An ideas on what test the car has to pass and does this happen once its landed or is there a time limit?

I know there is another Noble in OZ but I worry about emissions and stuff?
