Hi Guys, as you may have gathered by the previous post we are also thinking about places to live.

Basic requirements for the 2 of us are near/on the beach, couple of shops/restaurants/bars near by and not too far from a tram to get to work in the CBD.... thats pretty much it.

It seems the only options are Port Melbourne, Albert Park and St.Kilda

anyone have any views they can share on these or if there are any others i have missed?

Cheers all!

Brighton, Sandringham, Elwood, Parkdale, Mentone, Beaumaris, Blackrock..

We are moving to Chelsea next year although we only live 10 minutes away from the beach now, planning on moving closer as we love the beach and its damn un-australian not to!

All of those are good areas if your employers are giving you a decent enough relocation package to pay the rent - none of them are cheap, all at the higher end of the market.

Also look at South Melbourne and Middle Park which are beside the ones you mentioned. Possibly also Williamstown on the other side of the bay (it'll be a lot cheaper but no trams).

Houses around the areas you've mentioned will all likely be quite small and don't expect anything in the way of garden etc unless your budget is -very- generous.. wink

As long as you are near to a train station which most suburbs are you are laughing, most inner suburbs in the South East are 20 minutes by train to Flinders Street at the max. I work in Toorak and its literally 10 minutes on the train from my house or 20 minutes drive.

Not that I know of, I think so theres so few of us it would be quite a small turn out. Best to join one of the many car clubs here and get involved that way. Theres some good driving to be had out towards The Grampians and Black/Reefton Spur, scene of the shocking bushfires we had earlier this year. Forget going for a blast after work as well, the best roads are an hour out of Melbourne easily, besides summer evening are best spent on the veranda or the beach with a few beers and enjoying the outdoors.

We live in middle brighton don't-u-know, it's a tad on the snooty side, and a bit desperate housewives according to the missus, but very convenient for the train into town. We liked Elwood which is not as grundgy as st Kilda and a bit more cosmopolitan and no tram, nearest train station is a bit of a walk too. Colleagues of mine live Sandringham and Hampton and reckon that the eats are better and cheaper too.

Yeah, we're in Brighton East, East, East oh and East a little bit more.. (Cheltenham).. smile

The whole of Bayside is very nice, but yeah, you have to get used to the desperate housewife brigade out jogging with the clutch of stupid little white fluffy dogs and pointless not quite baseball cap sun visory things on of a Saturday morning.

Nice being 2 mins from lovely sandy beaches though and with it being in the bay rather than the ocean you can actually use the beach without fear of being dragged off by rip tides, or being turned into tapas for sharks.

Agree about Hampton/Sandringham, Hampton especially has some great restaurants.

Want to live by the sea? Why move to Melbourne? I can understand moving there for other reasons, such as it actually having a cultural life, but a beach? The natural environment is all that Sydney has to offer above Melbourne.
