Tyre tread limits
Discussion
Are there any minimum tread limits in Aus ? I have seen a number of tucks and cars running on tyres that resemble slicks !
Are Toyo R888 tyres legal here ? They have a tread pattern but I would not want to be caught out in the heavy rain in a set (have coped in snow in the UK though). May be worth a set for track days if they are legal to and from.

Bob, your in NSW right?

Condition of tyres
• For all other vehicles, a tyre must have a tread pattern around its circumference that is at least 1.5mm deep across at least 75% of the tyre surface that contacts the road.
And yes, semi slick tyres are legal, as long as they have some tread that can be measured. Call one of the tyre dealers that deals with them (check ads in Auto Action, if that still exists..) and they will be able to tell you which ones are ok for the road.

there is a wear indicator on the tyres and they say it is about a match head deep, that is the limit
R spec tyres like the r888, dunlop direzza, yoko ro55 are all raod legal just meke sure they have a DOT rating
Bring the tyres with you as they are not cheap here. I bought my last set of r888 sg from demon tweeks and got them air freighted to perth for cheaper than I could buy them here

Yep, they are legal. Can pick up Kumho KU36 semi slicks for pretty cheap if you want. The reason why so many cars are running around with no tread is because of the abysmal yearly roadworthy checks in this state. The place I went to (not my usual mechanic) only took cash, so I had to drive up the road to get some out. By the time I got back my roadworthy had been completed, without him even looking at the car – now I know my car is in good condition – brake upgrade, suspension upgrade etc etc but dodgy mechanics like him are the reason why there are so many unsafe cars getting around.
