Dear All, Apologies for being a newbee. We're relocating to Melbourne in a month's time and thinking of bringing our S3 over. Would really appreciate it if you could provide some advice on getting an insurance quote, as we need to know how much this will cost before we put it on the boat. Additionally we'll need to find a suitable barge to cart around our windsurfing kit (an probably a few relatives when they come to visit), which ideally needs to be an estate, preferrably manual, reliable and cheap! Given that the missus won't drive a car which doesn't go, would appreciate some advice. My new colleagues have advised against Holden and Aussie Fords as apparently they tend to get nicked.
Thanks in advance

Many Oz insurance companies won't quote on personal imports. Here's two that will :

www.dawes.com.au

www.aami.com.au (has an online quote engine)

Good luck.

Oh, by the way you need to get a Personal Import Approval from DOTARS in Australia before you put your car on the boat. At the moment, approvals are taking about a week from when they receive the properly-completed application. See this link for more info and the downloadable application form.

Hey mate

To be honest, I wouldn't bother bringing over the S3 - I have an 01 as well and they have lost a lot of value recently. You can pick up one for the high teens/low 20s now and although nowhere near a common car they aren't that rare. Just something to think about I guess.

If you do bring it over, mod it before you come because parts are stupud expensive here.

Thanks Colonial, I guess we have recently put in a new clutch, air con unit and also, replaced the cam belt, water pump, brakes and tyres, so although it's not worth that much it should be fairly trouble free for the next 2-3 years.

What would you get for less than $10K? in Oz I need something that's fairly large and preferrably an estate. In the UK there are loads of turbo forresters for less than 5K and also B4 legacy's, not to mention an assortment of Bavarian barges but there doesn't seem to be much in Melbourne that's fast and cheap? (and also manual) any advice?

Nice. Great little car aren't they?

The Oz car market is very overpriced. You may be able to pick up a first gen Subar Liberty RS wagon (mid 140kws) from about 92 with not to stupid kms for around 7-8k

yes audi's are not the most reliable of cars imho. on the same weekend that the a/c pump siezed on the s3 the diesel injection pump packed up on our 2.5tdi a4.

hence i'm now moving back to subaru, - albeit the missus doesn't like them

Try Shannons...www.shannons.com.au

I have been insured with them in the past and I liked the cover they offered (free glass replacement) but the premium was a bit higher than other companies.

I also found that GIO (or SGIO..cant remember which) dont advertise their coverage of performance / imported cars but if you call during regular business hours they can put you through to someone that will work out a premium for you.

If you are really struggling try www.justcarinsurance.com.au but make sure you look at the cover carefully, especially the excess and the value of the car.

Have ended up with Shannons - everyone seems to think the service is OK and they where the cheapest of the guys willing to give me a quote. All set to pick the car up tomorrow - Sydney watch out !

Come on the Blue Mountains cruise mate. Should be a nice day...

I'm with Shannons for both my comp car as well as my home and contents insurance. Can't fault them so far. Very open to mods and the like as well

I should have qualified this in my original post ..... if you use AAMI's online quote engine it does not ask if the vehicle is a personal import nor does it exclude personal imports anywhere in the fine print (I looked very carefully before insuring my last personal import with them)

Couldn't make the Blue Mountain Cruise as I didn't pick the car up 'til midday and then had to go into Sydney.
