Now, I don’t tend to post much on PH, can usually be found hanging about on Lotus forums when I get the chance, but I promise, despite that, I’m actually a rather nice guy.

I’m slowly cobbling together some plans for a short trip down-under after my A-levels this July. I’ve pretty much got a week sorted for, saying in Melb with some mates.

Anyway point being, after Melbourne, I’m somewhat lacking in things to “do”, so I thought it may be worth popping in and saying G’day , put my feelers out as it were.

For what it’s worth though, I do make a mean Korma…

Well it all depends how much time and money you have got and how far you are willing to travel?!

Deviant, making him travel to Perth just to make you a curry is prob not on his agenda smile
There is another thread similar to this one, but really you need to say time/budget constraints at least before people could offer advise. Sure Melb could keep you occupied for a few weeks, although it will be winter when you get here

Sorry if this has been covered before, did have a little looksee, but didn’t come across anything.

As far as time and money goes, for me unfortunately the answer to both is – rather limited.

Got about a week and a bit to play with, and I’m more than happy to travel, I’ve friends in Brissy who I could stay with for a weekend, though my (albeit slightly sketchy) aussie geography tells me that a 1000mile walk is probably out of the question.

I’d be up for doing traditional “gappie” work, but I doubt anywhere’d have me for just a week.

David

PS. As lovely as perth sounds, I think the trip is roughly equivalent of going from London to Moscow, so, just a liiittle too far for me.

I think I would just stick around Melbourne if you are that limited on time.

I can thoroughly reccomend you hire a car and drive along the Great Ocean Road. When we did it we went as far as Warnambool which is a very pleasent little town. Took about a day with quite a few stops along the way to take in the view and wander the many seaside towns along the way.

From Warnambool its a short drive to see the 12 Apostles....big rocks sticking out of the sea.

If you want to get back to Melbourne quicker then there is an inland freeway you can use.

Melbourne is the best city in Australia - and I'm from Sydney (born and bred).

Great Ocean Road is a must. Also do a macabre sticky beak and see the bushfires around reefton spur/black spur which are excellent roads as well.

Plenty of things to see and do in Melbourne so just stay there.

Thank you ever so much for the input guys; the great ocean road looks like a must, even looking at piccys on t’internet it looks utterly stunning.

My initial plan was to try and squeeze in some skiing in Christchurch NZ, though that’s looking a little touch ‘n go now – but, no worries, seems I’ll have plenty to in Melbourne.

One last thing though, Melbourne to Brissy via anything but air – is that a completely crazy notion?

Yes.

Boring roads or if you take the scenic route will take at least 3-4 days. 7 considering you are english and not used to driving long distances.

Agree with the above, plenty to see and do for 2 weeks where you will be. Shame you only have 2 weeks.

melbourne to brissy - definitely air (jetstar or virgin) sub 100 about 3 hours travel time. while in brissy dont forget to feed the dolphins in morton bay (3/4 hour by boat from the airport) as for good drives- nothing round brisbane, infact until the coast road to Port Douglas, otherwise they are shoddy goat tracks with too many trafpols.

Dave you've find the Lotus crowd (some ex-SELOC) on Aussielises.com where there's a bunch of names you'll probably know. They're always up to something, and are pretty well spread down the east coast. Were you around Sydney on a Wed nite, there's a large gathering at Naremburn Pizza where you'd be more than welcome. They're even known ;-) to let us Lotus 7 owners attend......

Don't know that I agree with the lack of drives around Brissie, Mt Glorious and Mt Mee are both sensational runs in a clubbie ( 7 ) we did the Glorious run yesterday.

Watch for the damp spots in the shade where it can be slippery, slow bikes, slower cars and most importantly the cops.

So many bikers get killed on Glorious it is fairly heavily patrolled during the day.

I can second the Great ocean road (GOR) or the Refton spur, black spur, anything around the king lake or Hillsville area is worth a drive as well. There are a few different clubs around so if you have got exact dates i might be able to point you in the direction of something worth seeing. If there is any racing on at Phillip island while your around it would be worth heading down there as well, there is a museum on the circuit site and there are plenty of touristy things to do on the island. It’s about 2 hours drive from Melbourne CBD. During the week you may be able to get into the FOX Classic car collection (http://www.foxcollection.org.au/)

There may be a few other links or things you can find out about hear as well.

Tiger Airways is the other one too, although their schedule can be up and down! They do fly a lot across the Great Australian Bight at night so Perth might not be out of the question. It is further to Perth from Melbourne than NZ. Roads add Mount Donna Buang too that!
I am not a fan of the Gold Coast, too Vegas and Miami for me!!! but that wouldn't be too hard to get too either by air and pretty sure there is lots to do and see up there.
Plenty of sport to watch in Melbourne depending on what time of the year you are here. Aerial ping pong and Rugby league. You can ski in Australia too but the season would be shorter than NZ. NZ is easy to get to from Oz. Add Pacific Blue, Air New Zealand and Qantas to the flights list for that as well as Jetstar and Emirates.
Good idea to have the relevant licenses so you can drive (No idea what they are) as outside the major cities, it is not as easy to get around as the UK.

I used Jetstar for Per>Mel>Per once...Their cheapest flights tend to be the redeye and most of their flights land at Avalon which is a bit of a treck from the city. Not so bad in the day but crap when you land at 1am.

The last time we went to Mel we used Virgin Blue and they were much more pleasant...nicer aircraft, better flight times and they landed at the other airport which is right by the city. We found the flights on the net and they were about $30 more than Jetstar, worth the extra IMHO.

Oh a must do for an English tourist in Melbourne...Go and do the Neighbours tour and quiz night. Its very cheesy but is good fun, you might not like or watch Neighbours now but I bet there was a time in your life when you did watch it! The quiz night is hosted by several actors that put a real show on.

Superb tips guys; just had a look now, can’t believe how reasonable domestic flights are, definitely something to look into.

Cheers though Ryan, will definitely keep an eye on the msca website too, would love to take in some racing at Phillip island, looks like a spectacular circuit; same with the fox collection, bit of a hidden gem that place.

Taking Economics, Maths and French at the moment and I’m off to study Economics & Management at either LSE or Royal Holloway after this - hence the whole oz trip, bit of a break before my 3 years of fun fun fun wink

Did think about it, had this little plan to walk to the summit of Kosciuszko and ski the whole way down, but my mates were a tad “critical” of aussie snow, so, hence the NZ bit.

Really cannot thank you all enough for your input lads, some really awesome ideas, owe you all a beer or two.

PS. Yes as truly awful as it is to admit, I did indeed do the neighbours thing, rather compulsively, a while ago, might just pop along, if only to see the street sign. paperbag

Ah you will have to go on the tour to see the sign...The street is actually call Pin Oak Court if you just fancy driving yourself there.
