I am goinfg to need some new tyres on the car by UK standards. What are the tread depth rules in Aus, specifically NSW, and is it worth be fitting them in the UK before shipping ?

Tyre depth should be the same as the UK. I've found tyres to be cheaper in the UK and you would get better choices then here.

Bob -- very much worth new tyres before loading the car up in the container. As a guide, we run Yoko AO-48's on our Caterham SV and here those tyres run £90+ a wheel. In the UK the same tyres run £ 60 so do yourself a favour and at least come with new shoes on your car for the first little while.....

Make sure they are DOT approved and have the marking on the sidewall.

Well worth bringing some tyres out. Japanese tyres (Bridgestone, Toyo, Yokohama, Kuhmo, Sumitomo) are very popular here..the last set I bought were Sumitomo's and were $160 each in a 205/50/16. I'm always amazed when the UK based PHers are getting similar tyres for 60 pounds or so!!

I bought my toyo proxies r888sg the softest compound they do from the uk and got then air freighted here for about $150 less that the hards that they sell here, so put new ones on before you get here and even bring a set for later just put them in black plastic bags and they will be fine

before the aussie $$$ went down against the US it was cheaper to buy from tire rack and import something decent. 235/45/17 F1 Asymetrics were around $1400 from goodyear Aust as against $760 imported.

What does the marking look like ?

It looks like a set of 245/40/18 Toyo T1S need to be procured and fitted before containerisation then !

I believe it literally has an embossed DOT on the sidewall. I will try and remember to look at the Bridgestones on my car tomorrow.

I think you should be okay with Toyo's. They are very popular over here.

A bit of both. Now that I'm here and have transport, somewhere to stay and have started work things are a lot less scary and I'm enjoying being in another country.

Apart from the midges, reliable weather and history.

I went for Toyo's... worked out v slightly less to buy than in the UK - cause I factored in transferring the money over from the UK and getting a satisfactory exchange rate - though to be that anal about prices... says a lot for how much work I've got at the mo...

I must stop comparing... I must stop comparing... I must stop comparing...

Fuel might be half the price of the UK, but everywhere is twice the distance... hehe

No, seriously, I love the place!!

It's just my Aussie missus that's taking some time to adjust from living in London...

One of my good mates was in the tyre game in Melbourne, I can see if he still is involved if it is use to anyone. I used to get all the part worn tyres of the cars serviced / sold from Porsche Melbourne that he looked after smile
