I am going over to Australia in March and I was hoping to drive my friends car (Aussie citizen, Aussie car) whilst I am over there.

My friend has checked with their insurance company and they don't offer temporary car insurance (ie add me onto the policy for 2 weeks) but do allow drivers that are insured on their own car and over 25 to drive, or they will add me onto the policy for the remainder of the year at a cost of $200 !!

I am 23 and have insurance in my name, so unfortunately I don't fit into this category due to my age frown

Is there anywhere in Australia that will cover me for a 1 or 2 week period whilst I am in Aus? (British driver, own car insurance in UK).

Thanks biggrin

God that's expensive, to insure my focus (yes, I know not a sporty one) it only costs me $235 fully comp for the year. Thats with a $50 excess. We recently added my father in law to the policy, and that only cost $12 for a 9 week period. That's for the whole 9 weeks, not per week.

Cars over here have rego, which is like the uk road tax, but this comes with third party insurance, I beleive for injury to other people only, it doesn't cover the car your driving, or the object you hit. But I have found insurance relativley cheap over here.

Can your insurance company do it for you in the UK? Or you could just insure it yourself when here. I wasn't asked for no claims bonus, and they assumed 7 years. As long as you have an address, I am sure you could do it yourself for cheaper than the $200 quoted.

www.shannons.com.au might be worth a look at. They seem to quote quite nicely and offer trackday / motorsport cover so they certainly seem to be open to alternative covers.

there is also

RAC
HBF
SGIO

If the car has rego (ie. road tax), then you can drive it as it has 3rd party insurance included in the rego, providing it is legal for you to drive it. Can you pay for any damage to the vehicle? If the owner and you are willing to take the risk, then full cover may not be the only option.

Shannons are great to talk to. I'm under 25 so shouldn't technically be insured with them but I am. Modified turbo. Just over $1000AU a year which is pretty cheap considering my less than perfect record.

A lot of policies will cover another driver. however, if there is a claim made then the excess will be massive for an unlisted driver. Just something else to consider

I have never had problems getting anything from Shannons even when I was under 25...I think the over 25 thing is a remnant on their website. It says on there you have to be over 25 but if you phone up they dont seem to care.

Most insurances offer a 14 day cooling off period. Just insure it and then cancel on the 13th day and get a full refund if no claim made......
