I've been in Australia two and a half years now on a 457 visa.
I really want a Westfield - I've driven a few of my mate's cars back in the UK (1600 CVH, 1700 crossflow, 2.1 Pinto and CBR 900) and I think they're great fun and the climate here in WA would be perfect for one. I'm aware that there are dealers in every Australian state now but the prices are too high and there's very little on the second hand market.
Would it be possible for me to bring one in from the UK as I'm still a temporary resident? How could I get round the need to have owned one for a year in the UK?
With the current financial climate and a northern hemisphere winter, there are some real bargains to be had right now.
Any advice welcome, cheers

Stu.

Stu,

have a look at www.ozclubbies.com which is the forum here in Oz for all things Se7en, and Clubbies in general.

there have been some very tidy Westies for sale in the past few months, you can join for free and perhaps it could be prudent to post a "WTB Westfield" and give folks some idea what you are looking for...

Cheers,

Steve

Looks a bit of a chuckle especially at that price:

Bulding your own Westfield at that budget sees you in something with the Toyota 1.6 20 valve engine so $30K for something so tricked out is very tempting....though that 'rollcage' would have to go and be replaced with something a little more protecting!!

you got to watch out for which state in Oz you're in -- different states have different emissions standards, so what engine is legal in one is not necessarily in t'other frown

this is where owning a Clubbie in Oz *can* truly suck -- get it approved in one state it it may have to live its' life in that state. some states are more progressive than t'other so www.ozclubbies.com in the Building and Registration can help you a whole lot.

either way, Clubbies are the most fun you can have in a car with your clothes on ;-)

Cheers guys. I'll have a closer look at this in the new year. I suppose with freight costs from the UK, the prices wouldn't be too far out.
I'll be waiting a couple of months now I think as we've just seen a pretty major downturn at work with a few getting finished last week (Engineering - mining industry).

I wonder if I could do a novated lease on a kit car? scratchchin

The Oz distributor of the UK Westie kit is located in Perth in Perth clicky here

I believe that the Oz distributor of the Leitch from NZ is also still Perth based.

Leitch no longer trade in Perth according to their website.

There is also Arrow sportscars which I believe used to be Westfield Australia...now there is a Westfield UK with an Aus agent....or something like that laugh

Redback Motorsport over east is bringing in MNR kits which receive brilliant reviews in the UK...I'm quite tempted by the kit that uses an MX5 donor.

Murtaya are supposed to be sending cars here and I did exchange an email with a bloke in Perth that has got a kit here and is aiming to be the Aus agent...so far though none have been built in Aus and there is no pricing available.

I seem to remember reading on Oz Clubbies that importing a kit doesnt work out any cheaper. You still have to use the right engine to be road legal and not all of the donor components are easily available so you need to modify your kit to accept local donor parts or import donor parts. Also even though there is nothing wrong with the UK kits they are unknow to Aus engineers so you have to go through the cost of having the chassis go through a torsional strength test.

having said that torsion tests are not over expensive- talk to an engineer in your state!

I only mentioned what was available in Perth, Redback is literally a couple of Km from me and the Vortex is an amazing piece of kit, I've had a look at the MX-5 version and it would be a doddle to throw together.

You will find Sonja and Greg a joy to deal with for any of your needs.

Primarily F Ford and Clubbie stuff but very well versed in all forms of motor sport.

All of the usual disclaimers apply, no affiliation just a satisfied customer for bits and pieces.

You could do a Fisher Fury from the dealers in Sydney I think. NOT cheap though.

Probably easiest is to get a pre '89 car and import, less stringent rules, however not many around, most likely a Caterham or early Westfield or there are a couple of Cyclones in the recent CKC mag.

Also doesnt help being on a 457 either.
Ive been here 3 years on a 457 and am now toying with doing PR however we're in a pretty comfortable lifestyle with paying less tax.

Decisions decisions.

457 has nothing to do with it if you're doing a P.I. as DOTARS just wants you to not sell the car on in the 1st 12 months you've imported it.

Check out Skelta, Ray and his team have some very tasty cars that have done spectacularly well in Targie Tassie -- no affiliation, just like Clubmans of all types!

Oh yes I do like the new shape Skelta!! Not so sure on the MK1 car but I have always been a 'function over form' kinda person so I could live with it for the performance.

Are they not something silly like $100K though?

Get up to Brissie and book a ride with Ray I've seen the Skelta driven in extreme anger and it's bloody quick also been in his S2000 powered Westie ( Vanderfield )

Spent three laps holding in what I hoped were only going to be bum burps.

Crikey Dave -- that was an image I didn't need!

OTOH, I saw on tele the in-car video or Ray in Targa Tassie and the Skelta-R is a frighteningly FAST car and very responsive!

My dad currently has his westfield for sale on the oz-clubbies site that others have informed you about and we are also in perth so feel free to contact him to speak about the car.
But if you are looking for something for track days only then you should ask him about the OMS busa that he also has for sale

cheers phil

Gday Phil, your Dad would be Peter yes?
IIRC that is a Steven Fox Westfield? Richard Woodward (was the WA selling agent) used to pit crew on my race car.

That would be the yellow ford Duratec one that's up for $30K? Nice plate as well - 6plus1
Looks good and is exactly what I'd be looking for. Like I said earlier though, the downturn in work just before Christmas is a bit unsettling so I'm going to wait a few months to make sure my job is secure before I commit to another car.
Cheers for all the info guys.
