Has anyone been along to the driving centre/track up by the airport?

I quite fancy going for a blast one day and wondered if anyone on pistonheads has been up there who could let me know what to expect.
It seems they do open circuit (max 14 cars) every Friday afternoon.

Anyone else fancy it? I'm not sure if pre-bookings can be made or not. I'm just trying to get a feel for the place for now.

I have not driven there but I have nosed around a few times and spectated their sprint series a few times.

You can hire the skidpan for a morning or an afternoon. If you get 15 or so mates together it works out to something like $80 each with an instructor on hand. They lay a course out with cones and you go round then join on the back of the line to go again. They change the layout a few times through the morning.
I dont think they are to strict about which direction you take around the cones but burnouts / drifting are a big nono

If we could get enough of us together I wouldnt mind doing it..not that my car is any good for that sort of thing biggrin

They do the performance driver training and they also do normal trackdays...last I heard is that on the trackday you can not do multiple laps. They release cars a fair time apart and you complete 1 lap and pull off to join the line again. I think they claim the circuit is to fast and to hard on brakes for road cars.

The sprint series is popular. I noticed over the last few years it has got pretty serious though! Modified Evo's seem to rule the roost. The best bloke to chat to about that is Tim the pool man...I cant remember if he did a full season or not but I know he has run in an RX7...e also won Bathurst 12 times so he knows his stuff tongue out

The V8 'Supercars' are rollcaged Commodore SS so not really worth the asking price.

If your looking for some driver training I have heard on the grapevine this crowd are worth talking to: www.nolimitevents.com

I'm not specifically after driver training, more somewhere to legally have a bit of fun in the car without subjecting it to a full on track day. (I'd be using my Nissan Silvia S13 which I use daily for work so don't really want to break it).

If we can rally enough of us together, I'd be happy to do the leg work and sort out the bookings and stuff.

Maybe incorporate it into the next Perth meet?

12 times Bathurst winner? Sounds like we wouldn't need an instructor is Tim was with us.

Bloody hell James! I've been offline a few weeks and missed this one... No I haven't raced at Bathurst, driven it in a road car... did 1 round of the ATCC at Wanneroo in the 80s and raced in the Street Car class there for 11 years.

I did a few rounds at AHG a couple of years ago; good fun but not quite the real thing... Yes they do have days where you can run your own car in a non competitive way, not sure of the details, I'll see what I can find out.

I'm in the WRX Owners club and we go to AHG a number of times during the year using single skid pan, double skid pan (timed) and the long track. Fun place with lots of run off and nothing to hit (unlike Barbagallo and Collie). Its definetly not too hard on a standard road car. Note that getting laps on the long track on a weekend is next to impossible due to the V8 rides being so profitable for them. (although we manage to get 2 Sunday mornings a year on it).

They run tuning arvo's during the week but you have to book in advance. Otherwise join an existing car club.

Jeez you've got to be doing something seriously wrong to find something to hit at Wanneroo...

There's potential to hit something at Barbagallo, especially if something breaks but its not too bad. AHG is pretty harmless relative to Barbagallo though.

Don't know why but I'm definitely more "wary" driving at AHG than Wanneroo. Might be because I've done many thousands of laps at Wanneroo (at a guess between 5-10,000 laps yikes )but less than 50 odd at AHG...

I watched the fabcar evo clatter the armco at AHG and I also watched someone reverse a 911 through that big toyota advert that used to be on the grass opposite the spectator area...bloody stupid place to put a metal sign!

And they put bricks in the "flimsy" looking plastic signs that line the skid pan - or at least they used too! You can also fall into the drains in the grass on a big off on a wet day...

I've hired the track out on my own before for testing ($100.00 per hr from memory)on a week day. They asked a few questions about my driving ability, but were satisified when they found out I had done some driver training with them and compete off and on in the sprint series and motokanas.

Not sure about the tuning days - I've heard that you only get one lap then have to come in and line up again - not even enough time to warm up! I've not been to one though so it may not be true.

That was certainly the case at the pre-sprint event test day I did at AHG. We did it to learn the track but I found that impossible with 1 lap at a time.

I like the idea of the skid pan. Would like to try to find the balance of my car. After geo changes i am struggling. Seems like it would be a giggle. Do you need a helmet?

Bugger. Bit of an outlay to get a helmet. Dont really fancy sharing one in this climate!

A while back I did the tuning afternoons and also the performance driving one at AHG. Basically for the performance drive it is motorkhana type driving on the skidpan with an instructor in the passenger seat. From memory this was about $80 or $90 for 3-4 hours. For tuning afternoons you get about 2 hours for about $50 (again from memory) during which you can go on a motorkhana course and on their short circuit. Its one car out on the circuit at a time and you just do one lap before coming back in and the next car going out.

I recently joined the WA Sporting Car Club and now regularly go to their tuning days. After joining the club and paying for your CAMS 2S licence you can go to as many track days as you like. Track days are $60, with the first one included in your WASCC membership as well as entry to the V8's and the other races at Wanneroo. While the cost of joining the club may at first appear expensive, I find it good value because once joined you can go along to as many track days as you like for $60 where the track days run for the entire day (not just 2 hours) and you can do as many laps as you like. Whilst Wanneroo may at first seem a little daunting it is heaps more fun and more satisfying, and as long as you keep a sensible head on your shoulders the sand traps and run offs are fine in my opinion - you can take it easy the first time out because you have all day to build up your confidence. Since joining the club I have also received a lot of help and advice from other club members.

In my opinion, if you are looking take your car out to the track for a one off, then AHG is probably the cheapest and easiest way to do it. However, if you are thinking about doing track days a little more regularly (or if you get bitten by the bug) then I would strongly recommend joining the WASCC.
