Which should I get? Both can be had for around $10K but you will get a later year 206 GTI for this price. The main purpose is a general run around but I want to be able to use it as a track day toy once every couple of months. The 306 is a little bit quicker and better handling but for $10K you can only get a 1998/99 car while you can get a 2002/03 206 for the same price.

Is there any other options I should look at? Not sure if I want a Japanese import though.

I had a 306GTI6 for two years as a company car, and it was stunning, but glad I didn't pay for the fuel, their a bit thirsty....

Both are good handlers, and track day material.

If it were me, I would go for the 306, there bigger for the every day commute and shopping trip, but great ful around the track too.

Just one thing, make sure the cam belt has been replaced regulary, mine snapped (even though it was 10k shot of the recommended change) and cost the company 2 grand to fix.!!!

Go for the late plate 306. Pugs started to go down hill after the 205GTI and the 306 was their last decent attempt at a quick(ish) car that was reliable. IMHO
